Good Evening.I am brand spanking new to AR10s or ARs in general for that matter. I wound up here after a friend asked me to build him an AR10. Most likely he will buy the receiver and I will purchase and put together the rest of the rifle while he vacations overseas. Looking forward to a lot of learning and reading.
**Edit** just checked the ASA website... "Our Side Charging 308 Uppers are not intended to fit on either the DPMS or the Armalite 308 AR Platforms. Our 308 Uppers are designed specifically to fit onto our 308 Lowers please contact us with questions." I believe this is a change, as I am nearly 100% their 308 uppers were interchangable with Armalite AR10's in the past. ===
@Soscure, welcome to the site! I have a quick suggestion in case your friend has not bought the upper reciever yet... look at the American Spirit Arms upper reciever. It's an Armalite AR10 compatible, billet aluminum, left side fold-down charging upper. It has no topside charging handle (no gases in face or worrying about where your scope is or moving your head to chamber the first round while looking through the scope), no forward assist (I'm pretty sure the side charging handle works also as a forward assist), and no shell deflector making it smooth sided and very carry friendly. About the only "drawback" to these I've gathered is that they are a little bit heavier (being thicker/billet in construction) than an armalite upper... but had I built my rifle from scratch I would have most definately started with this ASA upper. They look freakin sharp too, IMO. So, does this guy want to go all out? If so, I would like to float a few more ideas your way... LOL.

Hey all thanks for the warm welcome. My friend has not purchased any parts yet. We are still trying to define his requirements. So far it has to be a .308 round and it has to be ready to accept a suppressor. I have read a little bit about suppressing the ar10 and here blow back is pretty bad. Anyone have any input? I also read a bit about the Gas Buster charging handle, is it as great as the manufacture claims?
I would use an adjustable gass block with a suppressor. You can make make your own from the standard AR gas block by simply adding a 6-32 set screw in the gas path way.
Don't know much about the fancy charging handle, but it would seem that you would still have way to much gas to deal with.
I am completely new to the AR10 and it's variants so bear with me. I hope to learn a lot and ask a lot of questions on my quest to build the best hunting AR10 I can. Thanks for being there guys and look forward to talking shop.
