@reefclimber, www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=272336327 - Noveske is an Armalite pattern, and there upper recievers are actually armalite, they forge their own lower recievers, and are considered one of the best, esp. their polygonal rifled SS barrels. By specifically saying you want to be able to switch to a Designated Marksman (rather than Designated Sniper or SASS role) set up with upper change, I assume you would have carry weight and versatility as major factors? 18" barrel in whatever you get would be a good length, IMO. Noveske has a "Leonidas" which has a 14.5" barrel CQC rifle with 2" attached flash hider, made for full auto, cans, and a proprietary length gas system that with all else is designed to make recoil very controllable even with the full the auto version. (IMO, if you want to be able to make a 600 yard shot at most with confidence... a 16" barrel not unlike the gun on it's way to me would fill both the roles you have in mind... forget two uppers in that case! If you are intent on making 1000yard shots on game or zombies or paper targets, 18" may not be long enough even, and you might have to start looking to buy a drag bag to carry your rifle...). If price is a big issue with you, for 15-30% less than Armalite (basically) you can downgrade to DPMS offerings. DPMS/Remington/Bushmaster just got bought by George "gun ban" Sorros's outfit... and it is well known that the DPMS family wants to move towards unique proprietary modularity... making them much less cross compatible with other companies now using the Stoner SR25 family platform. DMPS/etc. rifles are mass produced bargain priced, and I've seen others have quality and functionality issues. While you can get yourself in an "AR10-like" family on the cheap... you get what you pay for, and I personally wouldn't own a DPMS. There are other "bargain" companies that put out decent rifles without all the baggage, and there are other highly renowned companies like Georgia Precision, Larue, and LWRC. Also take a look at American Spirit Arms, but I think their millet uppers (etc.) make for a fairly heavy rifle, even with fluting (fluting is something you should really consider, especially for your DM upper). I would stay away from the piston driven models (you might as well get a SAIGA AK if you want extreme field durability under heavy use and low maintainence.) Laurue is awesome, but they make bulky, heavy rifles more suited to a benchrest and competitions than carry type roles IMO. I personally spent three years researching my purchase before the money and the right rifle came together... which is on my profile and will finally be in my hands next week, so I know where you are at. There is a lot to figure on, but basically how much money you got, how light do you want to go, and I would assume you are like me... you want a rifle that doesn't have to be sent to a gunsmith or have this done or that done or come with components you don't want, and have to replace, to get it "perfect" (besides things that attach to rails) right out of the box. You can end up spending more than what a Noveske (or other out of the box top shelf custom companies) cost by the time you just get it like you want it. Start added up how much a pair of top notch iron sights, buttstocks, forends, etc. cost when you start looking over the $1300 basic rifles.. I think if weight, quality, accuracy, and longevity are your main concerns, rather than money and a desire to "build your own from scratch", I would only buy an Noveske. No matter what I would stay with the Armalite family, if I were you. They are here to stay. Noveske's stuff is completely compatible with Armalite... they are just custom armalite AR10's. If you need to get in at the entry level, you can go with a basic model Armalite for around $1400 and build and customize your way up. You've got a lot of choices in front of you, if you got the money... let Noveske do all the hard work for you on your first purchase. The carbine Noveske N6 coming my way weighs about 8.4 pounds without the iron sights on it. Think about that when you look over some of your options... an Armalite SASS (that is hard to find in anything shorter than 20") is an "out of the box" ready to go rifle... that weighs nearly 12 lbs. And cost just about as much as a Noveske... Have I mentioned I like Noveske?... :P But other people may not see things like me... but if you are like me... I wanted to hear what anybody and everybody had to say... good luck and I'll be glad to help you with your choice... I've still got a LOT to learn... but hands on starts next week and I'm stoked! Happy hunting brother!

Hello Everyone,

If you have ever spent any time on on M14 forum, you may recognize my handle, Ole Silver. I am a confirmed M14/M1A junkie and want to add a Armalite SASS to my stable of long gunns.

I have been reloading for a few years and have enjoyed the time spent doing it and the great results that I have gotten loading for my gas & bolt rifles.

I am an old Air Force vet livig in NW Arkansas and look forward to retiring in Colorado in a few years. The wife & I have managed to pay off the mortgage on a nice 35 acre spot of land in Colorado & can't wait to build the house there & move.
I'm going to have my own private 200 yard range set up there. What a gas that's gonna be.

Anyway, I just wante to introduce myself. I'll be lurking in the background here learning as much as I can before I drop the money on the AR10 SASS.

At least I have all the gear I need to reload for it already.

Thanks,

Ole Silver

That's funny. I'm an ex-pat Arkie living in Louisiana, and I'm looking forward to retiring in NW Arkansas in a few years. Maybe I'll buy your place
