A 16 inch barrel will get you out to 800, but a 168 grain bullet will be going trans-sonic at that distance. Your holdover is going to be pretty substantial. A .308 w/16 inch barrel is effectively a 600 yard gun. And there's nothing wrong with that. I have a 16 inch on mine and I find the portability of it justifies the shorter max effective.
For glass, your options are pretty wide open. For target/hunting a 3-9x or 4-16x variable usually is the best fit. If your focus is shorter range stuff, a 1-6x or a red dot sight will do the trick.

Thanks!! Yeah I don't need to go to 800, 600 is more than enough. I have a Leupold 3X9 ill put on it for now, maybe upgrade to a night force later on if I like how this is shooting with the 3X9.
Hi all! Ive been lurking in ar10t for awhile, seems a lot of the questions I google send me here, so here I am. I am a 2x OIF vet(Army Inf.), a NRA & NC CHH insturctor, and really enjoy learning peoples opinions on tactics, firearms, balistics, ect. If I learned anything about guns, its that I will never know enough!
I am planing my next sudo-build, an AR10a4 (20")upper, using amralite's lower w/ collapsible stock. Nothing fancy, but its been a long term decision making prosses, gun funds are limited and per my wife, there can be only one (more) .
So coupled with a 22 & 45 pistol, a 556ar & 308 boltgun, I will feel comfy, for ww3 or armagedon, or occupy wallstreet becomes "occupy anything they want".
Hello to all fellow AR 10 owners and shooters.
I came across this forum looking for a barrel source for my R-25 (DPMS .243)
I bought it a couple of years ago and and immediately installed a muzzle brake and Geisselle trigger. Shot 87 gr. Hornadys with 45 gr. H4350 very well out to 500 yds. for the first 1300+ rounds but now accuracy has fallen off and it's time to re-barrel. Haven't decided which barrel to go with but will probably be a 1:8 Krieger so I can shoot the 105 weight bullets.
I thread and chamber all barrels on my bolt guns and have for the past 10 years - which has been quite a few barrels - but have never installed a gas gun barrel. I took the original barrel off the R-25 and installed the muzzle brake so I am pretty sure I can do the re-barrel job and already have the tools to do so.
Anyways, I am glad that I ran across this forum and hope to gain and possibly contribute some good info.
Welcome to the group!!! how good of accuracy have you been getting from your r-25 .243? i have heard good things (except the triggers) about the .308's, and i planned on the .243 as my next rifle.
