Ok, first post. My name is Mike and my friends call me. .. . well. .. I do not have any of those but they would call me Mike.

I spent 11 years in the navy and then 3 in the army. after my trade schools as a jet engine mechanic, aircreewman, rescue swimmer and SH60 power train systems mechanic i spent 3 years in Japan stationed with Heliantsubron squadron 14 where we chased submarines and performed combat search and rescue from the Aircraft carrier Independence. I then went to San diego California for 7 years working in 3 different commands including a 2 year tour on another carrier, Nimitz.

I spent my time with the army as a helicopter mechanic working on black hawks, cobras, hueys, and kiowas. My last 15 months with them was as a platoon sergeant assisting the San Diego sector Border patrol do their thing. I earned expert marksman badges for both pistol and rifle early on.

I am now a full time student.

I have 2 tomboys that also love to shoot.

What am I here for? I need to make up my mind between an M1A and an AR-10. i realy like the M1A because I enjoy open sights and want to move into a weapon that will put lead on target with devastating effect at longer ranges. i have no problem with consistent hits at 300 yards with my ranch rifle. I just want to upgrade is all.

I know everything about the M1A and love them.

I know nothing about the AR-10 and need to know everything.

1. I have heard there are reliability issues. Is this a fact or just heresy. If true, how hard/expensive to resolve.

2. I hear manufacturer names thrown around all over the place. If there is truely good and bad choices for where to get a gun and or parts, that is what I need to know.

3. Would I save considerable money to build my own, I am after all a jetmech and love to build stuff.

3. magazine issues, availability, price ranges. i live in california, for now, maybe not for long.

4. lowest reasonable price without sacrificing reasonable accuracy and reliability.

5. best iron sights options. i live the gerand style NM sights.

6. best barrel for best of both wrords. i want accuracy out to 1000yds but want it in the shortest lightest reasonable way possible.

whatever route i go, this will be a recreational rifle and a hunting rifle. i do not want limitations, i want options, that is why i am not buying a bolt gun. i may or may not shoot competitions and this gun is going to be 2 of 2 rifles I own, I am not a collector and I prefer to keep my armory small. My current rifle is a mini14 ranch .223 and i have a 1022 for the kids.

I plan to do some digging later and might start a thread if appropriate. But for now I must be on my way to class this morning.

Welcome. I have an AR-10 variant made by JP Enterprises. I don't use iron sights, and at 1000 (or even 400) yards, not sure my Eyes would allow it. I have never had any problems with feeding with one exception, one type of bullet that won't feed properly, it is a hollow point of a "weird" design, I reload and got the bullets knowing they may not work, but wanted to try it. I was also in the Navy, but got out to fly for the airlines. With a Flat top and Mil rail, you should be able to put on any type of iron sights you want, as well as a scope when you get older and realize you need it. Are you still in the San Diego Area?

No, I left San Diego when I left the navy. I started having kids and gave up my terrorist hinting permit and moved inland. We settled in Tustin for a few years riding out the real-estate debacle till we ended up in a house here in Corona. Do you live around there?

Do you know any airline pilots who did not get their wings in the navy or air force?

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am gonna go dig around a little and maybe start a thread or two to stir up the fire breathing hornets.

Welcome in,meds are passed out at 7:00pm and I messed Mine,no telling what could happen now. :silly:
I do own a Garand all set up for national match, one M14 "Loaded" so it is a semi national match with the barrel, sights and two stage trigger, when I bought it new there was a coupon with it to order accesories at a greatly discounted price,I got ten twenny round mags, the tool, bipod, the new generation scope mount and the carrybag. That is a mighty fine rifle but Mine eyes is shot so I instilled a 3-10 mildot Sightron scope,it shoots very well.
I also have an Armalite AR10,I instilled the Geissele two stage trigger and that one upgrade made a world of difference in the way the target is engaged,I installed the 3-10 Sightron scope on this one too and it is deadley accurate, for as far out as I can see, fourty yards or so. :woohoo: :P any how if it come to a situation of packing either one of these rifles it would be the AR10 as it is much lighter and does a good job on Prairie dogs for as far as I can see.LOLThe M14 outweighs the AR10 by quite a bit but I have not tried packing the M14 without the bipod and that adds considerable weight to the M14.

I all. New member here. I've been looking to get into some long range shooting again so I ordered a Armalite AR10 stripped lower yesterday. Not sure what I need to put with it to get an 800 - 1000 yard shooter so I will be crusiing this site for all the knowledge I can get. I'm in no hurry but would like to get it done by next summer. Early thoughts of what to put on the lower are:
Armalite NM lower parts kit, Magpul PRS stock....... this is as far as I thought so far.

I'm a former (early '80s) NM armorer, and shooter, for the Marksmanship Training Unit from Ft. Bliss, TX. Trained at Rock Island Arsenal. Currently a Sig Armorer. I have no experience with the AR platform, other than shooting them. Hopefully when I'm done building my AR10 I will have a little more knowledge.

Thanks on advance for all the knowledge I will get from this forum.

I've noticed a lot of talk about AR-10 barrels only lasting 1,000 to 3,000 rounds depending on ammunition. I am not used to hearing about this sort of thing? is this an AR-10 issue? Those of you that own an M1A also, do they have the same problem?

I like to shoot a lot and can foresee going through several thousand rounds a year. I have never gone through less than a hundred rounds per weapon at any range day. Sometimes I have put several hundred rounds through my mini14 in a day.
