Hello all,
I'm glad this site is here. I have a lot of questions that have already been answered just by reading some of the posts. I'm building an AR-10 SLOWLY. Pretty much all I have is the lower and a parts kit. I've got a POF lower receiver and used a DPMS parts kit but I think I'm gonna be changing most of them out already.
Oh, this will be my elk rifle mostly so I'm looking to build it lite and accurate.
I just found this site and am new here. I have been shooting for around 45 years now and have spent time in the US Army and two large city PD's. I have hunted, competed, and plinked with many different types of firearms, as well as carried them in defense of myself and others.
I own and shoot regulary a little bit of everything. I proscribe to the idea that it is best to start the shooting when your adversary's are as far away as possible, and transition from one style of firearm to the next when the range dictates, ending of course with knives and open hand control.
For years I have wanted an AR10 style system, but always thought that the bolt rifle was superior. My work related endeavors and competitive experience had shown that to be the case, but I still wanted one. I owned an M14S for a few years but was not satisfied with its accuracy. So a couple of years ago when I found a CMMG .308 lower for sale at a good price I picked it up and began to collect parts. A little here, a little there, until finally I had my very own completed AR10 style rifle.
I conceived it as a intermediate heavy urban fighting rifle, better at punching through barriers than the .223 (of which I have a few, and like) but faster at engaging multiple targets than the accurate long range bolt rifle. My rifle is fitted with a 16" heavy barrel with a Phantom muzzle brake. Since it was not meant to be a "sniper" rifle (I have 5 of those from .223 to .300 Win Mag with plans to build a .338 Edge)I put a Magpul ACS stock on it instead of the PRS stock, and a Aimpoint Comp M2 red dot sight instead of a Mildot scope. At first I was not impressed by its accuracy, until I needed to put the Comp M2 on my duty gun (broken Eotech), and put an old Leupold Mildot on it......My word, that heavy little gun can shoot. I suppose I always have room for an "urban sniper system" in my gun safe.
I am looking forward to learning anything I can from the members of this site. Glad to have found it.
Yes, the CMMG lower is designed to fit the DPMS, Knights Armament Corp. style of uppers. All of the upper components are DPMS. They were the easiest to get ahold of, and I was able to pick them up one piece at at time. Looking to add some iron sights on a 45 degree mount here shortly, but have not decided on how I want to do that quite yet.
Hello to all!! New to the site and new to AR10's! I just bought my first one...An Armalite AR10 chambered in .260 Remington. I have not gotten to shoot it yet, but looking forward to.
Thank you for the Welcome. Obviously I am new to the AR10 world. I bought a flat top and have installed an Armalite free floating quad rail, Troy Industries D.O.A. BUIS and a Mako (Fab Defense) T-POD Gen II vertical for-grip/bi-pod. I am very happy with this rifle. I will use it to deer hunt, target shoot with family and if the suburb is ever under attack, for home defense. I sold a SKS with a composite stock and a scope mount to help fund this purchase and I am very happy with the upgrade. My brother is in law enforcement and advised me on what he knew. I can't wait for deer season.
I have not decided on a scope and would like some feedback on the other members choices. I have a Leupold Vari-X II (3 x 10) with a 50mm objective on a Remington 700 ADL (30.06) and have had some trouble aquiring a "jogging" deer in the reticle. I know that it is not easy to do with any type of scope but looking for advice.
Hello New AR10 shooter! Congrats on the rifle and sounds very nice. I did a bunch of looking around for a scope and I ended purchasing a Vortex (Viper6.5-20x50). I have not used it yet, but I found alot of reviews online that were very positive so I decided to run with it. They are priced very well and from what I have read and heard, the compare very well with Leupold, Nikon, Bushnell, and some have mentioned Zeiss (conquest models). Their website has a lot of good info on it and if you google Vortex Viper reviews you will see what everyone has to say about them. Welcome aboard!!
What's the typical range for ahooting deer in your area? If it's less than 200 yds or so, you might want to consider a low power variable a 1-4x or 1-6x. Down at 1x or 2x, you'll have a much wider field of view. Many scopes of this sort have a dual short-range/long range reticle design.
