Not sure what I need to put with it to get an 800 - 1000
A FF 16" barrel will comfortably get you to 600-800, FF 18-20 will get you out to a grand. I have heard reports and seen videos of folks getting out to a 1000 with a 16" barrel, I haven't seen it done first hand or done it myself. Armalite chrome lined barrels are, IME, good for about 1.25-1.5 MOA, sometimes less; their SS barrels usually shoot 1 MOA or less. A good competition-type trigger mech is nice to have as well.
I've noticed a lot of talk about AR-10 barrels only lasting 1,000 to 3,000 rounds depending on ammunition. I am not used to hearing about this sort of thing? is this an AR-10 issue? Those of you that own an M1A also, do they have the same problem?
While not a barrel expert, I'll share what I know. When a barrel loses accuracy, the biggest culprit is throat erosion. Once the throat erodes to a certain point, the bullet doesn't align with the leade properly, and this causes a shot to shot inconsistancy.
An AR barrel shot out at 1-3K? The only folks I know that would replace a barrel at 1-3 thousand rounds are high-power and bench rest competition shooters, where the slightest difference in POA/POI means the difference between winning and losing.
Unlined/untreated bores, for the average shooter last about 10-12k before there's a noticable drop in consistency, IME.
Chrome lined/ion-bonded/nitro-carburized barrels usually last 15-20K, depending on the type of steel and treatment used.
SS barrels are usually good to go for 8-12K, depending on the type of SS used. Noveske claims his SS barrels are good for at least 15K and beyond. 410 SS is pretty common. 416 SS, which Armalite and Noveske use, is of a higher quality. Lothar Walther has a proprietary SS they call LW50 which they claim has a logevity of a chrome-lined barrel due to the low sulfur content of their steel.
Ammunition has a large part to play in how long a barrel retains it's accuracy, too. "Hot" ammo, cartridges that have a larger than standard powder charge, wear out a barrel faster than standard loadings.
Using commercial ammo, or staying within the recommended spec if you hand load, chances are you'll wear out before the barrel does. And if you do wear out an AR barrel, it's a pretty easy process to replace it; only takes about an hour or so.
thanks for all that. all of it makes perfect sense to me. i think i just picked up on about half a dozen comments i read here and there over a few hours of reading all over the place the first night i was looking into the AR-10.
My name is Michael and I have been shooting since I was 12. I have a FNP 9mm, Stoeger Single Trigger Coach gun & a TikkaT3. Looking for tips and information for building an AR10A4 (.243) for boar hunting.
I just purchased an Armalite AR-10, I do not know much about this weapon but when this opportunity arose I jumped on it because it seemed like a great deal. Here is a picture of the firearm, Has LMT stock, pri-mounts charging rod, Daniel Defense quad rail, Stage 4 trigger, Surefire Scout light kit, Surefire muzzle break and there might be a few other things I'm missing but that's the gist. Gun had maybe 100 rounds put through it. I need to purchase a new sight for this and I would like some opinions as what would be the right choice. I will probably be doing some hunting with this as well and target shooting. What would be an effective range for this weapon? With the right glass can I get out to 800? Also looking for a good place to buy mags as I only have one 10 rd right now.
