a supply of generic cipro,Bactrim and azithromysin is cheap. Bactrim for staph,
and urinary tract infection. Cipro and azithromycin treat respiratory infection, tick borne illnesses and anthrax as well as most other bio-terrorist infections and
diarrhea illnesses from contaminated drinking water. Try to get a script for a stock bottle from your doctor or worst case, veterinary meds. I get stock bottles, they have a desiccant in the bottle to block moisture. then I vacuum wrap the bottle and store in the freezer (in the dark). This way, they should last far past their expiration date. You should stock up on your routine meds for your hypertension, allergies, arthritis, diabetes, etc as well. If you are willing to pay cash and are honest with your doctor, he will work with you. Most meds that are expired will just become less effective over time. they won't become toxic.

Siscowet wrote: Will Cipro kill Borrelia Burgdorfi? (lyme Disease) Generic Doxycycline is cheap and will do the job for Lyme. I agree Ciprofloxacin and Zithromax are essential, as they are broad spectrum. Maybe some Flagyl ( metronidazole) in case of anerobes such as you would get with a burst appendix, or any stomach wound. Also Levofloxacin will do everything Cipro does and more, though it is pricey.

This is some fantastic information guys.....Thank you both!!

cipro may kill Borrelia, but the standard oral drugs are doxycycline, erythromycin, cefuroxime, amoxicillin .
I didn't mention doxycycline initially, because due to a world wide shortage, the price has gone skyhigh. My pharmacist told me that her cost for a stock bottle went from about $100, to $3500. So given other alternatives are available I assume most people would want to go with something else.
On a bright note, if you are bitten by a tick and are concerned about lyme you can take 2 100 mg doxycycline tablets at once and it will prevent the disease.
Flagyl would be my 5th choice drug to have as it does cover intestinal flora and is also the best treatment for C diff, a common hospital acquired diarrhea.
I picked cipro over levofloxacin due to cost although it does have better coverage than cipro. WTSHTF you want to have at least 100 tabs of each of these to be able to treat more than one course of infection. Even buying stock bottles of these can get a little pricey, though some are surprisingly cheap.

Thanks Foxhunter that is really good info. The shortage of Doxycycline is a perfect example of greed over social responsibility in the Pharmaceutical industry. I worked in that industry for a very long time and witnessed the degeneration of business ethics within it. Unfortunately I have been lax in getting my war chest together, but it is time to do it. Those are great recommendations for preserving the meds.
In addition, prevention becomes important in that type of situation. Cleanliness, handwashing, through cooking of food, etc etc. will prevent intestinal parasites as well as slow down potential transmission of diseases. Infectious disease specialists have discovered that simple thorough handwashing by everyone in a hospital markedly reduces the transmission of infectious disease.
Stock up on Alchohol, Sterile bandages, Hydrogen Peroxide, etc. etc.. An old time cure for heart burn is a teaspoonful of bicarbonite of soda in a glass of warm water. It works, just don't get dependent on it long term as it will eventually change the ph of your stomach.

You guys and your fancy filters and stockpiles of 100s of gallons of water...

You can safely "absorb" tainted water via enema.

The more you know...

Akai wrote: What does everyone think would be the best way to handle Health issues? I realize that the strong will survive, but even they might come down with something as simple as a blown out appendix. What do you keep on hand for emergency situations? Looking to stock the old medicine cabinet. :usa:

One of the things you need to do is stay on top of your shots ESPECIALLY Typhoid. Typhoid was a major killer in rural America before WWII, my dad's brother died of it and my dad almost died from it but he survived.

Primary cause of Typhoid is contaminated food or water which gives you Salmonella Typhi and Salmonella paratyphi which is related but not as severe. I stay current with all my shots and do so for several reasons: I travel frequently outside the US and will eat and drink while there. I have always drank from available water sources, this means, streams, rivers, rice paddies, you name it I have drunk from it. I have seen a LOT of folks get sick, very sick drinking the same water I do. I have never got sick and I believe its from staying current on my shots and not using a lot of anti-biotics.

The other killer is common dysentery. While mostly found in hot climes and especially the tropics you stand a decent chance of living thru it if you can stay hydrated. Again staying on top of your shots if you are a traveler is very important. After that you go into the food and water avoidance from less than certified sources. Most folks that get it in Mexico do so from eating and drinking from street vendors. On the other had exposure in itself acts as a preventive which is no doubt why I have never hand any issues. But if you are a city dweller and have been most of your life then beware and you may want to carry a anti-biotic pak if you travel outside the US. Foxhunter covered this very well.

My wife and I both recently got and update on our typhoid shots. We live out in the country, drink well water and while we filter it we do so for grit, sand, etc not for bacteria. Just ask your doc.
