My name is Ray from Texas. I'm a retired Naval Aviator, gun owner since age 10, and proud new owner of an Armalite AR-10. I own close to a dozen AR-15s of one flavor or another but I am looking forward to learning all the nuances and secrets of the AR-10.
I will start out with a question to all you AR-10 veterans and experts... Do you recommend the Armalite Picatinny rail sections for the stock handguard or is there a better option out there? $40 for a set seems somewhat expensive unless there is something special about them that I am missing. Thanks very much in advance!
Welcome! Good to see a brother veteran come into the family.
As to your question, the rails for the stock handguard are a good modular addon for placing rail sections only where you need them, keeping things clean and simple. Other options would be a matter of brand, budget, and personal taste for the most part and may involve a whole new handguard. There is a quality difference amongst the various brands, I myself am partial to Geissele, Noveske, Daniel Defense, SWS, & Armalite, in no particular order.
Just fair warning when shopping around, there is a lot of cheap knock off stuff being passed for the real thing. If in doubt, just ask us here and we can take a look.
I'll scan through my bookmarks and see if I can find the rail sections at a better price for you.
Jockey, welcome. If anyone would know the answer to that it would be Colt, so it's good to he already got you the info. This is a good site for a very good rifle. I think the AR10 will be fast become your favorite. Which model did you get?
Welcome Ray, :usa: Like Colt said there are cheaper options for rail sections.
If you want to mount a sight of any kind then you'll want a free-float model. If it is just for lights, bipods, and such then the two piece drop in style will work fine. Colt listed a pretty good selection of the top brands, I'd add ADM to that list. Most of them make both types. Best advice is to browse the forum and check out all the pictures to get ideas about what is possible. There are LOTS of ways to set up your rifle, rest assured it will be a good shooter no matter how you decide to do it.
Welcome welcome JockeyRay........ This is your lucky day and You are a lucky guy.... You get to hang with us...
There is a remarkable amount real information here.... and knowledgeable clever guys..... Excluding me... However I am very charming.... Glad to have you on board......
Hi, another newbie here, so I'll just do a brief intro here. I'm a fairly long time shooter here in the communist republic of Massachusetts. For firearms experience, I love 1911s, as well as my rem 700 which I have built up to be what I want. It is time for me to return to the world of semi-auto rifles after some absence. My club here is only good out to 300yards, so almost any 308 will do, but I wanted to go with something nice, so I'm here....
Haven't picked one up yet (gathering the last bits of info before I do). A local shop has a used rifle that I asked about in another thread that is a AR10tnf. I will read back through the threads as well. Always a good idea...

It is indeed good to see men with good sense joining in with others of like minds.
You've just become fellow members with a seriously great bunch of men and even a few women who all appreciate big bore ARs and the like so you are indeed in the right place and of course, encouraged to read and ask questions about anything you need or can't find in threads already.
