Where You Live was created by MrMarty51
A place to discuss conditions of the area that You live in.

I guess I can star by saying that "Big City Traffic" scares the heck out of Me, I havent been in the heavily populated areas enough to "Learn" how to "Have To" get around in that kind of traffic.
The only time I ever tried to drive in that sort of traffic was in the hollywood area of California.I think I may have caused some "Road Rage" amongst some of the residents of that place.
Now do`nt get Me wrong, I like visiting those kinds of places and seeing all of that sort of stuff, BUT, it is nothing that I would ever want to "HAVE" to live in.
If I take off from My house and drive for three minutes, might be less, I might see as many as two or three other vehicles, and that also puts Me out into the wilds of the ranch lands of Eastern Montana.

But on the weekends it takes me 15 minutes

Seen the Missouri Breaks out there. Nice wild country except for the rattlesnakes. A guy I know just moved to Jordan. Montana 200 has to be one of the emptiest highways I have ever seen back in the 1980's. Saw more missile silos than I did buildings, although I hear Montana is a bit more developed nowadays, I know it is around Bozeman and Flathead Lake.
I live in big timber country on a very big and clean Great Lake. A lot of open spaces, and a days drive to the north is the real wilderness up in Canada. If I want to get away from people, I head 25 miles out in my boat. Bad news, we just got another 10 inches of snow last night on top of 20 inches on Friday. This is April?

I live 36 miles from work and it takes me about 1/2 hour to get there. I live right on the NH/VT border about 90 miles from Canada. I have a camp about 3 miles from Canada. I live in a small town and I have lived here since 1980. If I drive from my house for 3 or 4 miles I am in the woods with not a house in sight.

I live on a dead end street in a small town that is 1/2 mile from the school. My kids both walked to school and I always had a house full of kids staying after school. I couldn't live in a big city. I was in a couple larger cities while I was in the Army and it wasn't for me. I like being able to get away from it all and spend time in the woods. I don't think there is a flat spot in the whole state. I guess that's why they call it the Green Mountain State. You can leave my house and be on a hiking trail in less than 10 minutes. Hunting is the same distance.

I don't always like the politics of the state but I don't think I could move out of it because of the 4 distinct seasons we have and the people I have come to know over the years.

biggest problem in this area, is the 1970's recession never left. There are just no jobs for the young people, so they have to leave. A lot come back to retire, but the community is getting older and older, and losing a lot of it's vitality. Taxes in Wisconsin are very high, and that doesn't help either. We have a Republican legislature and a Republican governor, but they aren't doing anything significant about taxes. But it is beautiful. A lot of clean water, nice hills, and a lot of forest. My Avatar is usually an Eagle because we have a nesting pair 200 feet from our house in a 140 foot white pine. It would be hard to move except in January to April.

I live on a farm in southern Illinois. nearest neighbor is a half mile away. It takes 10 min to drive the 7 miles to work. This is the foothills of the ozarks where flat farmland meets rolling hills and the hunting and fishing is great. 4 pleasant seasons. Far enough south that the ponds only get frozen hard enough to skate on about every third year.
The taxes and politics suck thanks to Chicago though, and if I had it to do over again I would have settled in West Tennessee

As the depression was,I do`nt think this area ever did leave the depression, like You stated, there are no jobs here, well, until recently when eastern North Dakota discovered horizontal drilling.
Now there are jobs to the east of us and the boom is moving this direction, so I better be out in the hills and plains as much as possible because when it comes everything will be shut down to permission only or absolutely no trespassing. The jobs will be here though. :cowboy:
On the Eagles, a very funny story.
My youngest Boychild was here from Alaska,He wanted to setline some catfish to take back with Him for a fishfry with some of His friends.
We had set our lines in one location and He wanted to hit this sandbar just about under the Yellowstone river bridge, on the uphill side across from town.
We were walking down the steep grade under the bridge and soon He exclaims,"Dadgummit dad, someones throwing whole catfish away, here`s a skeleton of one".Well He makes a few more steps and another exclamation about heres another one,he is slightly suset about this, afew steps further and another catfish skeleton, well by now He is fuming about them wastefull people dumping their fish like that and something about if they are to lazy to clean them then they should just saty home, I`m a saying He was quite pizzled and internally I`m like busting a gut whe nthere`s another skeleton He sets of in real anger about it now.I await until he kind of slows down and I mention something to the affect about maby it could be Eagles catching and scattering them carcasses about like that, You should have seen the expression on His face, like the wind had just abruptly left His sails, OH Dad, I think You might be right about that. for once in My life, Dad was right. :cowboy: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I have been over in that territory a couple of times, just passing through to get to Tennessee where I have a cousin that lives west of Clarksville.
My other cousin that does tree work was traveling with Me, He lives in Marquette Nebraska, He and I went for a drive so He could try and find some tree work.
We left Mitch and Debs house and headed westwards, kind of drifted around, the hills kept getting bigger, pretty soon We were climbing in elevation, after traveling along like this for about an hour or so, I started hearing banjo music. :rotfl:
Well, it was real pretty country, an area that I think I could move too, far enough into the woods to recluse and close enough to a bigger city where parts and supplies are redily available. :cowboy:

That North Dakota oil boom is really changing things. The area around Dickinson stinks like a refinery now, kinda like Billings does as well. Price of jobs I guess. Reminds me of what happened to Gillette Wyoming south of you when coal got going big in the 70's.
Overnight mobile home parks sprouted up that had room for a thousand trailers each. Gillette went from a sleepy little town to the second largest city in Wyoming. Same things happening to Dickinson. Bismarck is growing fast as well.
Enjoy your elbow room, who knows how long it will last. Good story on the Eagles.

I used to get out quit a lot with My Uncle Buck, but then He got old, He is now in Hospice awaiting for His journey into Heaven, Yesterday I told Him, If You go to heaven before i get back, Tell My dad Hello for Me and that I love Him.
I need to get out more.I have a garage and too many projects to think about, current one is a 79 Chevy 3/4 ton. 203 transfer case was`nt shifting correctly, I think it is a bent fork. I just got it pulled and am ready for the car warsh with it, then home to diskasemble it.going to go get My little trailer as I do`nt wanna mess up My pickup, before going to warsh, I will stop by and see How Uncle Buck is doing, He is heavily sedated due to pain, but, He always aknowledges when I caome in and talk to Him, He sticks out His had and I give it a very light squeeze and tell Him that I love Him, that about all a man can do at this stage, OH, It is not a sad thing, I am actually happy for Him getting to go and live with His Father in Heaven. Where I pray to go when My time is up.
Now, I need to get out more often to enjoy what i have. They say "You do`nt know what You got until it is gone", well, I know different, I know what I have and if I am not out to enjoy it while it is available, then when it is gone I`ll be going, "Why was I too busy to go out and enjoy what was given to Me, so freely, then the regret and remorse of not doing so in the first place. :cowboy: OK, Rant over. :woohoo: :twothumbs:
