I hate to admit, but I did not do any break in on the barrel of the older 10T (24" Stainless Match). I loaded a batch of 165 grain Remington bullets, (got then cheap a few years ago) in Hornady Match cases and powders including Viht 140, H 4895, and IMR-4895. Then went out and got used to the rifle. Eventually I changes over to Sierra Match King 168 grain bullets. That and IMR-4895 worked will in this rifle. I mentioned to MSH that I was going to try Lapua cases, and he recommended that I stay with what I have, as these rifles are a little rough on the neck of the case. When I started the new project I talked to Tim, one of the tech guys at ArmaLite, and he recommended that I buy a box of half a dozen or so different loads, trying to stay around 165/168 grain bullets. They can't recommend hand loads, as they void the warranty. I recently bought a couple of boxes of Remington's cheapest for breaking in the new top end, and picked up several kinds of Hornady match type ammunition. These were what the local range had in stock, There are quite a few different brands available, some loaded with Sierra bullets. With iron sights you will have to be a lot better than I to shoot well enough to tell the difference in the match grade ammo. I probably won't shoot any of the real low cost (Wolf steel case) ammo through my rifle, though it would probably not make a difference.
I am also interested in the Hornady Superformance (I think that is how they spell it), they are getting higher velocities than I have seen before in the .308.

Take Care,

Barry

Hello, I have been upgrading my collection. From .45 ACP 1911 to 10mm Delta Elite, and from AR-15 to my newest rifle the JP Enterprises LRP-07 Rifle in of course.308Win. I really enjoyed test firing this weapon, and intend to use it to replace several of my other rifles, for hunting, plinking, target shooting etc. I have been reloading since my father instructed me over 20 years ago, so looking forward to getting that going again. Please forgive me if I ask a dumb question.

CJR...What ammunition do you suggest for ~1MOA at long range, and what ammo do you suggest to break this puppy in, ideally something inexpensive.

I always suggest Hornady 168gr A-max or BTHP or TAP, although the TAP is abit more costly...
I used the Hornady for the first several hundred rounds..and my A4 CB turned out great...and you also end up with quality brass for reloading if you decide too...but definitely use the high end ammo to start...I know the cost is up there, but you will be better off in the end...just my .02 ;)

Engineer....I am also interested in the Hornady Superformance (I think that is how they spell it), they are getting higher velocities than I have seen before in the .308......
Some one not to long ago posted on that ammo....as much as I love the Hornady ammo
he stated that it was blowing primers out of his AR-10....I have also read a couple of short articles to the same on other forums...
As with some types of Hornady ammo...I really think that the SF..is more designed for BOLT GUNS...than the SEMI-AUTOS...I have not confirmed this with Hornady yet...but I would give you even odds on it.....it seems to be like using HOT LOADS...to use a "loose" comparison..
Be careful....
I would check with them and ArmaLite as well before you use it...

I couldn't figure out what they were doing if it isn't higher pressure or a powder with more area under the pressure curve. The problem being that more area under the curve means higher pressure at the gas port. So max pressure could be OK. I hope to do something to get a variable gas system.

I think elsewhere I mentioned the sniper with the KAC SASS. The only failure was a firing pin locked due to primer material getting into the passage.

I have been a long term 10mm fan. I had a Delta Elite, then a Delta Gold Cup. One of those I should have kept. Anyway currently a Kimber Eclipse in 10mm. I still like the .45, so kept a Kimber Eclipse Target in .45. You can get over 1350 fps with the 180 grain bullet in 10mm. You might want to have a dovetailed front sight, though. I lost the front site off the Delta Gold Cup. That is very near .41 Mag ballistics. There are also loads for a .45 Super. You use a recoil spring the same weight as the 10mm, and use .45 Super brass. Comparison is about like the old .38ACP vs .38 Super.

Good Luck,
Barry

CJR,

Also look at "Cheaper Than Dirt". Sometimes they have over runs, or military ammo that is cheap.

I'm not sure why it would be important to use expensive premium ammo to break in a barrel. I know you wouldn't want corrosive primers, out of spec ammo, mediocre reloads or steel casings, but what would be wrong with using Winchester white box FMJ to break it in?
