I have an AR-10T that I bought new several (5?) years ago. The information indicated that it had a 26" barrel. This rifle came without forward assist, and with two Gen 1 magazines. The barrel was heavy stainless, and the for end is a solid free-floating aluminum tube with no cut outs or change in diameter. I recently decided that the weight of that barrel made the rifle too muzzle heavy and wanted to modify the gun. While making changes, I decided to go to the Super SASS configuration. I talked to the technical services supervisor and he mentioned that there was a kit for the 10(T) to change the gas system to that used on the Super SASS. It includes the front gas block, the adjustable gas system and a free floating quad rail setup (Part 10109600KIT, $485). I ordered a complete top end for the AR-10(T) with the 20" heavy stainless barrel, the Kit, a 10 pack of new 20 round magazines and the Magpul Butt Stock. I also ordered from another source the Harris Bipod and the ARMS 32 rail adapter. I have two sopes that I had used on the original rifle, a Nikon 6x18 (a little fussy about eye placement, but nice and crisp), and a Leupold 3.5x10 Vari-X III. The final product will be a Super SASS except for the unthreaded 20" stainless barrel.
This left me with a 26" top end without forward assist. I am now trying to get an L10B complete lower to make up a complete target rifle. This lower has the standard two stage trigger. I also ordered the upper receiver with the forward assist. I plan to change out the upper receiver when the bolt carriers become available again as the bolt carrier in my original (T) was smooth without the ratchet cuts. I have had problems with an original Colt AR-15 which did not have the forward assist. Cleaning and leaving tha chamber dry, sometimes after only 20 rounds or so I would be stuck with a very inefficent club. I haven't had any problem with the late AR-15s, a hundred to 200 hundred rounds and cleaning after shooting leaves the forward assist unused.
Is there anyone building barrels for the AR-10 in other calibers? I have seen the very expensive magnum top ends or rifles. The .338 would be nice, but ArmaLite doesn't have any barrels available.
