Thank You for taking time to post and congratulations on the Super SASS. I have read in several places (not just here) that the choice of the KAC was not completely due to any failure of the ArmaLite, but more on existing contracts and company infrastructure. I have no idea of the truth in these assertions.
There is one book about snipers that reviews the SR-25. The only problem with the SR-25 was that enough primer material was shaved off in the firing pin cavity to lock the firing pin. The sniper was able to disassemble and repair the problem in the field. I would imagine that the requirement for cleaning that area had little stress during introduction of the rifle. ArmaLite claims that there is a cylindrical section on the firing pin that should help reduce this problem.
I have a question about the KAC rifle as issued. One of the pictures I found did not show a forward assist on the SR-25. This may have been a mislabeled or early picture.
The sniper that reported on the SR-25 was in Iraq. He liked being able to carry a single rifle, as before he had to carry an M4 and his bolt gun. He also liked the fact that at a quick look he was not detected as a sniper as he did not have a bolt gun on his back.
The reports in the books indicate that Afghanistan requires longer shots and fewer cases in which multiple targets are available.
Thanks again for the post. My rifle is a 10T with the Mag Pul PRS, quad rail, Harris Bipod and much cheaper scope a Leupold 3 1/2 x 10 Mark III. Very similar to the Super SASS, but with a heavy match barrel. I like it very much.
We shoot the Knights in the Army. The first time shooting it at regionals at Camp Robinson last year made me a believer in the system. Three shots 3 hits at 900. I could not justify 5K for my personal weapon by itself. I got the Armalite for $2500. Then spent $3000 on a Schmidt and Bender. After tuning my Armalite in at 100 yds off a bipod and 109 degree heat I was pleased with the group and the group placement. Went out to 2-300 same groups center head. Used my Bullet Flight application on my IPhone to do dope at 750yds. 2 rounds center mass about 4 inchs apart. I am very pleased with the rifle and scope. The Army uses a Leupold MK4 3.5x10 on the Knights. It is a very good scope but it is not as capable as the PM2 at longer range and low light. I dont know if this helps any and I hope I havent confused anybody with their choice. I am a fan of the Armalite the Knight's Armament the MK4 and the Schmidt and Bender.
Thanks for the information. 4" at 750 yards means the shooter was doing his job too! There is a good book written by a British sniper that mentioned the S&B scope on their rifles. They spent quite a bit of time under siege. The bad guys learned to stay out at 1500 meters and they could unload weapons and make plans until a SAS type arrived with a Barrett. The author of the book is on a U-Tube video, he is firing the mortar and wearing flip flops.
Does the Knights have a forward assist? The AR-15s seem to need them, the heavy spring makes it less important, but you can ride the bolt forward, quietly chambering a round, but then you do need the forward assist to make sure the bolt is locked.
I really like the MagPul stock on the SuperSASS. I don't know if you use the sling around the left arm to steady the rifle in sitting or prone. There is a 3 point sling that is attached to the front of the fore end, the rear of the fore end and the buttstock, you can carry muzzle up or down also. It is called a Ching Sling, only problem is the buttstock connection as the sling comes with three sewn in swivels.
Keep letting us know how it is doing. What ammo were you using? I recently got some Hornady Match with the A-Max bullet, sure is pretty.
I shot today at 100 yds and it averaged .75 with Remington Match 168. That is the ammo that is on state contract and being a cop I dont want to buy my own at $2.00 or more a round so Im financialy happy with the performance of the Remington Match. As far as the 4 inch shots at 750 I hope it wasnt luck. I pray this gun shoots on par with my FN so I wont feel dumb for going new school. The Magpul stock is great. The inventor should have gotten the Nobel Peace Prize for its design. If Obama and Gore got it for whatever, this guy should have gotten a nod. I pleased with the USMC sling that came with it. Most of the shooting we do is on the bibod and I havent done much unsupported yet. Im still logging my zero shots. Just ordered the Gunslinger 2 bag for it. I work in South Louisiana in and around a major city and that bag looks like a good set up. Not too big for a hide and manageable for running up stairwells. Oh just use your right thumb as a forward assist. If the bad guys can hear your bolt going forward its probably time for the M4 or the Benelli and not the scoped weapon. Keep us informed on the ammo you shoot. If you find some shooting tighter Ill beg the state to expand the ammo contract. Safe shooting to you.
Can you expand on the differences between the Leupold Mk4 and the S&B PMII? I currently use the Mk4's, but I've been thinking of investing in the PMII for which ever SA I decide to purchase. Are the S&B's using Zeiss glass? Also, are you using mil/mil or moa/moa?
My 2 cents. Ive never personally fired a KAC so I can't say anything.
But I do have 2 AR10TS and The supersass with adjustable gas block.
They shoot awesome!! On good days and I do my part I can shoot 1/2 groups all day.
Maybe I just got lucky and got a good one!
