I don't believe in "perfect" or general purpose. That said I could make any and all of these suggestions work just fine.
The modular free float would seem to be a key for me, that way I can have all the neat kit I want and change things out for the specific purpose. :usa:

Almost in agreement with you on that. For example I think my sass is perfect, just not general purpose being too specialized. My definition of GP would be good for most things, but great at nothing specific. Just easy to have around.
General Purpose is closely related to Universal Fit, or one size fits all and we know how that works out, its called Obamacare where 80 year old men have to have maternity insurance.
As for perfect, wow that is rough...Being single for 25 years I can assure you I dated more than once the perfect girl along the way and none of them were perfect when the thrill was gone. And trust me, my standards were high: 8 to 80, will, won't or maybe, squat to pee, alright by me...
General purpose to me is a rifle that is flexible and fulfill the majority of requirements asked of it. Is it best at everything? No. Is it the worst at anything? No. If I have a $2000 budget, I am not going to get two 308 AR's set up to cover everything. I can afford one, and the equipment to let me use it in a wide variety of environments. That to me is General Purpose.

A short barrel on one would be a must.
A long barrel 24 or 26" with one of these sighting systems would do, for the other just a plain old open sight.

with both the lazer sighting system and the open sights for backup, and know very well how to use them both.
The only other thing I would add would be a portable hand held wind meter, with temp, barometric pressure and humidity.
