Yea, SLOW moving train, not sure why, I have seen critical need positions take over a year to fill and the system putting guys thru hoops the whole time. But hang tight you are now in the door and you will get hired at some point, sooner or later and when you do then you are there for LIFE, might as well start planning for retirement and life in that hammock. Avg pay in civil service is $83k IIRC, retirement at about that same level. Good on you, you deserve it...

I hope your right on the pay! :) It looks like G-5 is as high as the job gets though. As far as retirement goes, that is not in my plan, never has been. I'm sure they would force me out at some point but then I'll be looking for work just like I am now! :usa:
Until FDR and the progressive movement only the richest would have a thought about relaxing the last years of life. Now they have turned it into some perceived "right" every person has regardless of what they produced. Society will not function long this way, just a mathematical reality. :twocents:

Let me help you out here:

My buddy Jack when to work for Civil Service back in the late 90's, he had spent some time in the Army and they back dated his seniority date to 1986. Jack is getting ready to retire, he has worked the system and is retiring at near $100k, 30 years service etc.

You are x military, work it!!!! (Jack was not anything much in the Army, never saw a combat tour nothing, but it worked it his favor.

Another buddy came in the door like you at a low level. BUT he was older, had a wife and kids and worked the system to bring him in the door at a MUCH higher 'Step". There are about 10 steps and the spread is from $10 to $20k...so they bring you in at say a step 7, then you go to get promoted to the next level up, well in CS there is this thing called pay save (IIRC). Lets say you are making $40k, but the promotion will be to the next higher but at a lower step and you would now make $38k...pay save keeps that from happening.

Your goal is to work your military service for a earlier seniority date and to work the step system for a higher step. Jim who worked for me got promoted and also got a major step increase . Jim worked for me back in the early 90's and was making MAX he was making $105 or $103 IIRC, he retired a few years after I did and is knocking down $87k. Jim also got backdated for his military service, but I forgot how many years but a good chunk, like 6 years or so. He was a Medic. I had a LOT (as in over a 100) CS folks working for me and did my best to take care of them. Then one day as I sat there in a meeting I realized of all my senior staff I was the lowest paid, LOL.

Go for it and work it you will win cause when they make the final offer they do NOT want to start all over again, so you will be holding the ACE cards!!!

I finally got to the investigative stage they've been talking about. Hours of online forms, the names and addresses of 3 friends and a neighbor to verify I've lived here for at least 5 years is the only bit they didn't already have..........
As I start the form the second paragraph of the acceptance page states not to fill this form out unless a "conditional offer" has been made?????? They also wanted the form filled out with them listed as my present employer.... and then I have to check the box that says everything is true or it's a felony with a big fine.......they want a fresh fingerprint card as well... I'm thinking they might be serious now
I'm sure curios about this "conditional offer" thing, I'd like one of those!

The "filling it out with them as the employer" thing is biz as usual for that kind of thing JT. A very good sign that you made it to this point and if this is what they sent you to fill out, just handle as the directions state and follow them to a T.

Great stuff man...

This is like a Chinese water torture session! Now they have given me a tentative start date...... but still no offer with details.
So many idiots ended up in jail this weekend that the local sheriffs office can't do my fingerprints till 4 today because of all the court hearings.......I guess this is holding up the "official" offer now. I wonder what the next hoop will be?

Don't worry about it, you have the job and as you will come to know its a govt job it works at its own pace and that is slow and slower. You will be there the rest of your life, you will got to work at 8 and drop what ever you have in your hands at 4.59 and the door will NOT hit you in the azz as you are walking out.

I was in Civil service and never liked it for those reasons...which is why I finally quit.

No 9-5 here! Couldn't do it! I'll be outside on a construction site inspecting the work in progress and will work when the contractor works, at least that was the description the interviewer gave me. They pay for me to go home once a month but I have to have the time off built up to do it.
I hope I can keep this job for life, if they ever offer it. Longest stretch with one employer I've ever seen was 6 years, either the company would go under or I would leave for more money.

I'm going to start lobbying my congressman for more road construction in the Virgin Islands! :usa:
