MSH,

I am sorry that you feel as if I have disparaged or insulted you. I certainly have not intended to. I am simply trying to keep everyone in the firearms community focused on safety. Again, I apologize for offending you.

Well I have to say, it nice to know that things don't change with time....
As one of you gentleman told me a while back when a "dust up" occurred with this subject,,,,,the topic of reloading can start an argument between even the best of friends real quick...it is like politics on NITRO...very volatile...so lets all be adult and play nice....OK
LS....given that Hank is on the load council and so is MSH and also our gunsmith...we does hold a high position as does Hank, I have read back and all I can say is it was a mis-wording and there is no real FOUL>>>>>>>>>>>
Remember gentlemen That Opinions are LIKE A-HOLES....everyone has one....and makes noise when wind passes....considering the armature I am in the reloading world, I just read and listen and formulate my own conclusions...as we all do...
With the utmost respect to both Hank and MSH....both are good teachers....and deserve the respect that they have earned...
So again my friends...everyone take a deep breath and chill out..
Have a good holiday....I have to work...so there... :P

I started a thread a little earlier this weekend on Fine Tuning the AR-10T and wish I had read this thread first. After searching around on line, I found the following link which appears to be the Sierra Reloading Manual #6 Section on Reloading Gas Guns.

www.exteriorballistics.com/reloadbasics/gasgunreload.cfm

Many of the same issues and concerns voiced on this thread are repeated there. I do not have a Sierra Manual (about the only one I don't) but am wondering if this is the same information presented in the earlier referenced #5 Manual?

Communication is a good thing. Thanks everyone - I appreciate the opportunity to learn. It is indeed the reason that I am here.

Not to stir the coals on this...but it is funny how you look at the different manuals and they each have their own specs...as do the guys on the professional level...I usually look for the components that I am using or as close as I can and go from there....Hell I even went as far as adding up all the loads for one particular bullet weight (from one Manual) and then divided them by the number of entries in that line....Total # of grains divided by 6 =.....
just to try it...well it came out to be one of the middle entries anyway...LOL. So much for trying to be smart on my part...

The web link posted by Laughing Elk is indeed the Sierra chapter I cited when I started this thread. I didn't know it was available on the web; I have the manual.

It is confusing when you look at various load sources and see differing specs. It gets worse when you look back at very old manuals, and see still more specs that have now been superseded in updates. Recently I wanted to work up loads for a new rifle I bought. I built a spreadsheet and entered EVERY published load I could find for a particular bullet weight in the correct cartridge. The variation in charge weight was fairly wide, but not out of the ball park. I worked up loads from the low end, stopping when I got near the top end. That gave me all the velocity I needed to hunt, and the accuracy I wanted and expected.

My recommendation is to read the Sierra chapter to gain understanding of the principles involved, not to get a specific formula. As for specific load data, it's always safest to cross reference from at least 2 sources, just in case someone made a mistake.

Thanks Hank. Good advice. I was doing further research into the thread when I came across it - just pure B.S. luck that I found it. I am glad to share it with the group.

Hey Ya'll, Sorry to be so late on this topic, I don't have alot of experience in handloading. I do reload for my 9mm and my r25. I am currently using Lee dies with the factory crimp. My load of choice for th r25 is: Remington brass, 42 gr. Varget, 180 gr. Sierra Gameking, Winchester lg rifle primer. Oal is 2.802. I use the heavy weight as the twist rate on the barrel is 1:10. I read some where that is a decent weight for the rate. Any input on this would be helpfull.

I am looking to try a 110 gr. sierra varminter load dor this rifle but I'm not sure it will cycle. Any opinions on this would be helpfull.

I like to hear of other people experiences, I believe it is a good way to learn.

Thanks.

I am trying to develop a load for an Armalite SASS. I was recently informed that both Varget and Alliant 2000 MR are not a suitable powders for a semi-auto as they can build up very high port pressures. I have used some Varget in this rifle, and other semi-autos. Could somebody please shed some light on this. Also, if you have any other good powders to try (Reloader 15?) please pass that info along if you would. Thank you in advance.

Well I am not familiar with the 2000 but I know of several that use the Varget for the .308 in SAs....I personally use the IMR 4895 for target rounds and am going to test the IMR 4064 here real soon...I have heard good things except it don't like cold...AS for the Reloader 15...Zfk is well versed with that powder...I am also going to reload my TAP ammo with it....not sure if it helps but it is all I have to offer at this time....One piece of advice I can give...check out some of the other threads in the category...there are several with formulas and such...a wealth of info...
And welcome to the site....
