8 years in the Army as a Cav Scout then Airborne Infantry and afterword a civilian gun owner, this is the only use I have found for the forward assist.
I agree, when you can't let it slam home the FA does the job. I still find myself hitting it now and then just from muscle memory, needed or not.

I too have to agree that is enough reason to have forward assist on a rifle

Like you I carried one much of my adult life and can only think of a time or two I used it. It is mil-spec and while its rare to be used it one of those things that its better to have and never use than to need and not have.
