I can assure that for me that patch on the right shoulder combined with the CIB meant PAY ATTENTION!!!! I had a family friend that was a Major, he grilled me for a year with all sorts of manuals for everything but was clear that I was to seek out mentors with with the right patches on the uniform when I got to a unit. Wish I'd found one of those in Germany instead of the slackers I did.
That 40 hour week was in effect when I got to Germany, at least when in the barracks. I was really struck by how hard the line units in Stewart trained compared to Germany, They called loading the ammo into trucks going to the field.
It seemed like the 24th was going somewhere to do something all the time, then there was that little school out in the swamp right there at home as well, good times!

Bottom line its the leadership at the top that sets the OpTempo:
Over the years and especially when I was at TRADOC it was easy to see which GO's where going someplace and which ones would retire as just 2 bullets.
Over the years I had some incredible bosses: LTG Wayne Downing, BG Richard Potter and General Peter Schoomaker. Let me tell ya, working for these guys was a whole 'nother military compared to some other I had the pleasure or displeasure of serving under. In this case I worked very close to them, Potter promoted me once.
These guys were smart and quick, very quick. When you briefed they GOT IT! I briefed some GO's that at the end of the brief they had failed to comprehend, this also goes for many 0-5/0-6's. How they got promoted I have no idea. I have seen GO's get into fist fights, more than once.
I have never understood how the same information published now would have led to treason charges in WWII. We seem to think the public's right to know out weighs a soldiers right to live! :twocents:

LOL probably the subject of my coming editorial. I am going to discuss the weakness of our country and how the world sees this. We are being more and more disrespected because we show weakness, especially among radicals...
