I ended up falling into a VERY good deal for my last 6 months. It was spring when I arrived and I had gone swimming and bumped into a couple who told me about their camp for handicapped kids and asked me if I was interesting in "lifeguarding" for the camp. They also told me that Stewart had a program where, if you are eligible, you could work at the camp and pretty much get out of duty for the entire summer with just check-ins.

I checked into it and the next thing I knew I was swimming all day - 4 days a week with handicapped kids and chicks with HUGE, um... hearts...

I would check in on Friday and hand in my attendance sheet for the camp and then be off to the ocean but 7:30am for the weekend with, ya know, whoever...

I remember the last soldier I sent out to Ft Hood, Belton Lake Rec Area to be a life guard. 3 mo assignment as I remember and when he did not show up when the beach/swimming area closed I ended up DFR'ing him (Dropped from Rolls, over 30 days AWOL). So we cut the locks on his wall locker, then called the Sheriff, and FBI, there pasted on the inside of the locker were pics of the gal he cut up with an axe, yes pics were pre and post axe murder. FBI got him out in Ok IIRC and he was shipped back to Ft Hood where we turned him over to Sheriff Bell Cty, he went to Huntsville, TX and was on death row when I PCS'd...LOL, yea we only sent the cream.

Took over that Plt with 32/1 auth TO&E (4.2 Mortar) and I had 48 assigned...this 1st thought he had gone to heaven. I left 12 mo later for the OAC Ft Benning, Ga and I had 16 soldiers when I turn over my Plt. So what happened to them. Not one single soldier left on PCS orders or left the Army with a Honorable Discharge. Long story, but to make it short: FBI picked up 3 of them and they went to Big House, most of the rest either went to Huntsville Prison or Ft Leavenworth and 1 was on death row in Fl and if Fl did not get him then the state of La would nail him on murder 1 also!

JT that called that the VOLAR (VOLunteer ARmy). Post Vietnam. It was UGLY! Got to the point I rarely busted a soldier for pot, If he was smoking pot at least he was not on the hard drugs and hooked. One of my troops died in my arms from and OD and he was so out of it he injected Chocolate milk into his veins.

Got called over the loud speaker down in the motorpool to report to my CO ASAP! I run up to HQ and my CO tells me report to the BN CO ASAP! BN CO tells me to report to the Div CO ASAP! I am now SCARED CHITLESS. I do, wait a few min and he calls me in. I salute and he tells me to sit down, I think I was visibly shaking at that time. He tells me I have a rep for putting soldiers out of the Army under conditions other than honorable...now I am REALLY SCARED!!! He then says he is assigning a soldier, Pfc Ziggy Belcher and my job is to put him on the streets with less than an Honorable, and he would prefer that he end up Ft Leavenworth.

WOW and I thought I was going to Ft Leavenworth...

So Ziggy Belcher shows up the next Monday. He arrives at formation time. He pulls up in a long stretch limo, his door is opened by his chauffeur and a couple of goons are standing along side of him. He strolls over and finds me. Tall, thin black guy, impeccably dressed in tailored fatigues, I notice his long polished fingernails, especially his left little finger, fingernail, long, very long. Later I come to understand that was a status symbol among the cocaine crowd. Pfc Belcher walked the edge of being a soldier, the very thin edge. Many before me had tried to get rid of him and failed. His team of lawyers thwarted every attempt at a CM action.

He lived in a $360k house, paid cash for it.

We got rid of him and he ended up getting a Dishonorable in lieu of going to Ft Leavenworth. He punched out an officer in the messhall and threatened him with his goons. He sat in the stockade for some time and the longer he sat the higher the price rose for drugs on Ft Hood Texas. Heard he went back to Chicago.

I saw a little of that when I got to Germany, guys on the needle and guys that just flat couldn't or wouldn't handle the job. My chain of command there paled compared to what I had in the states. Training was weak at best but then my perception may have been skewed some. I was either in 1/75th or assigned to 24thID 2nd brigade S-2 in the states and it seemed mostly a squared away and very busy Army, from what I knew anyway.

We thought we had to kiss their butts since the draft was gone and it was all volunteer. Could not work them more than 40 hrs a week etc etc. Truly the worst time in the Army's history. In those days they took the exit signs for military posts off highways, the public hated us, could not mention Vietnam at all. Command suggested did not even wear a patch on our right sleeve, did not want the troops to think they were working for baby killers I guess...
