I used to slip down into "Goliad" to a little hideaway ranch. I knew the owner who was from RI and he'd let me crash there for a month or so now and then when I needed a place to get away from it all. He had a couple of lions that I got to play with and a mess of Ostriches and Emus. I also got to handle 3 different Bengal Tigers, 1 mountain lion and a kangaroo on different stays.
I like it down there but RI will always be home to me I believe... Can't imagine living for very long anywhere else at this point but who knows. The times they are-a-changin...
No, did not know about the RI flag, will have to check it out...
You know that RI and Ca are the two states losing population...not sure why on RI, Ca its easy to figure, taxes and rules and regs. RI, which I have been to many times is quite a nice and pretty state...
The RI flag flies at the Alamo (along with others of course) because of an Irishman named Francis Martin who stood with the others til the end....
RI is tough right now. Not very many jobs, taxes are tough and there is so much more to do in other places I guess.
Heck, even I was out of work for over 2 years at one point. Burned up everything we had since, due to consulting work, I only collected 13 weeks of unemployment which is almost nothing anyway.
I honestly can't see myself going anywhere while my parents are still alive. My father is STILL a fire chief in my town - 77 years old and 49 years just as a chief and with me having his "name-sake" for a grandson, as much as I MIGHT like to move to greener pastures, taking my boys away from my parents at this point, especially since they waited almost 40 years for me to reproduce, would just not be right.
I'm the 5th generation in my hometown and my Great Grandfather was the founder of our fire department and the very first chief so it's kind of a family business for us here and the fire insignia we wear is not so much a Fire insignia as it is a family crest to me.
I've been gone so much of my life that taking my sons away from my parents just seems almost criminal to me at this point so I'll be hanging here until I just can't hang any more or they've passed on. Then, who knows.
I can't even imagine living away from the ocean though so if I moved to Texas, it'd have to be someplace with ocean and no damn trash on the beach like I saw in Corpus the last time I was down that way...
