I know I did it a hundred times in the Army but that was 30 years ago. (Hopefully) gonna be going out this Sunday to the range and burn off some ammo with the Benelli and my AR10. It's supposed to be 27 degrees (high temp) so this will be a first for me in a very long time.
I know both weapons will fire like there's no tomorrow but what kinds of odd stuff have any of you bumped in to on a cold day of shooting.
I'm talking 32 and down....
Anything? I can't remember ever having an issue but this is a new year and all, it's a quiet night and I just thought I'd throw it out there...
Well, today here was a nice balmy -23 degrees F this morning. Great shooting weather. We don't run into problems until -45 F. Then lower velocity bullets like 45/70's and 22LR will leave the barrel and go about 45 feet and freeze in midair. You have to walk up to them, light a kitchen match and hold the flame right under them and they thaw and go on their way. Don't do what "Dumbo Bolinski" did, he stood in front of the bullet while he held the match, may he rest in peace. Seriously, though, never had much of any problem, but if it gets under 0F, I used to use a lighter gun oil. With the new hi tech stuff I don't think it really matters. Might change the zero a little bit as well, if your ammo is temperature sensitive and your barrel cold.
I did my Burris red dot video in the cold... 14 degrees if I remember right..
I have found that cold constricts the barrel abit till it warms up, we had a thread on this several years ago.. shooting with a scope one time...I noticed my shots were 6 inches low until the barrel warmed up...then they walked their up to Zero..
Not saying it is all the time...just my :twocents: :cowboy:

Like the others have said, you shouldn't run into any issues at that temp, function-wise. As a precaution, you might want to use a little less lube on your AR.
Yep, a little lube will go a long way in that temp range but that's normal around here (27deg) until it reaches 100deg don't waste time adjusting scope just give it a little elevation comp and you should be good to go. -agree:
We had a warm up. Only -21F this morning, but quickly warmed to -6F. Not even the squirrels are out. Deer all yarded up in the cedars. No target shooting for me this week.
Hell it's almost time for my bikini here... It's been 0 in the morning and heating up to around 20 during the day so we're styling for sure. I might even wear shorts to work today !!!!
Sunday is predicted to go up to 30 so I'm gonna have to bring a fan and some ice tea or lemonade or something cool to drink...
