My best load has made everything work with my AR-10, and so lately this has been my project (DPMS LR308-AP4 which is pretty much stock except some trigger work, a Tubbs CWS, and a careful barrel break-in). I've had trouble getting a consistent performance from any factory ammo. Basically, factory ammo has clocked with as much as a spread of 350 fps., not to mention horrible groups. From my observations I've been needing a faster powder than Varget to get to my target speed of 2600 fps with an acceptable variation in fps. The DPMS has a 16" barrel, 1:10 twist which loves 168gr. BTHP. I've been loading LC brass, CCI LR primers, Hornady 168gr. BTHP, on top of 44.5 grains of RAM-TAC. This has achieved my goal of a solid 2600 fps performer. I first tried RAM-TAC when I couldn't get Varget a few years ago. It's an excellent powder in my experience, with smaller spheres instead of the extruded rods, it burns fast and complete; my chrony shows the widest variance in fps is <25, all from a 16" barrel. With A2 iron sights (stock), I'm hitting a pie-plate size steel target at 350yds all day long. I can't see how tight the groups are, but for a MBR I'm sure that will work. Now I've put on the new Hi-Lux 1-4x CMR Tactical Riflescope, on top of a Burris P.E.P.R. AR mount. The Hi-Lux has a BDC reticle designed for a 168gr. bullet in a military loading (I think I'm replicating the M118 with the above loading . . . ?) and it really does work. I can go from 50 up to 350 (so far) at the range and hit each 50 yard increment consistently. I'm very happy with this set up so far, and the key was getting a fast powder for the carbine barrel
I will be buying a DPMS LR-308 want to make some loads up so I need some input. Below is what I got currently. I'm looking for hunting out to 600m that's why I choose VLD dual purpose bullet easy to use. Also what OAL are you guys seating to for reliable magazine function in the DPMS? Will be toping it with a LR/T M1 6.5-20x50 Mil-dot, scope.
