From what I have read recently , we are really close to making a quatum leap forward in capacitor technology. This will give the green light for shoulder fired rail guns. Then armor will be obsolete. Do a search over at Gizmag.com about capacitor tech, and you will see what we are getting close to. My nerd side is really showing , I can say that I'm pretty sure we could solve the capacitor thing in about 1-2 years with the right group. I'll shut up for now.
I always thought the gas powered rifle was a neat idea. I lost track of it so I don't know how far it got before it became vaporware, but the concept was sound. No more brass, powder, or primers. Just load up your mag with bullets & top off your tank with an ounce or 2 of unleaded. Imagine how small a 50 round mag would be with nothing but the projectile in it. The thing I liked most about the idea was controlling the velocity by adjusting the fuel air mix on the fly.
I can't think rail gun without thinking "Eraser". No doping wind or drop or nothing with a bullet that fast. The thought makes me grin like a little boy sneaking a peek at his first playboy.

Thanks for the clarification, that's what I was trying to get at. And I was thinking of capacitors and batteries when I wrote it, too.

Can you imagine the excuses Joe would give you for missing a target:
"I was running a little rich/lean"
"Dang, 10% Ethanol"
"Regular unleaded was all the supply room had."
"I had to drain my rifle to put a little gas in my car."

For you the forum is going to start having a Rail Gun fold out of the month.
This grinds my gears. If the Pentagon’s Inspector General Lynne Halbrooks has kids, have them go hang out in Afghanistan for a while and have her issue what she would want them to have.
I have a question related to this thread; What is a soldier allowed to alter on his weapon?
I have noticed some different looking rifles in pictures and have always wondered how far they can go. In my day you got yelled at if you so much as used a non-issued cleaning product. I had some gunsmith training before the Army but never got to really use it.
I'm not sure on what the rules are now, but when I was over there, I was issued, the m16a4, the carrying handle, acog/rco, the night laser, a bunch of rail covers, a bayonet, a three point sling and a broomstick/bipod thing. I might be forgetting something.
We were allowed to configure the accessories any way we wanted to, even put aftermarket stuff on.
But we were not allowed to take anything off it that came with it. So no magpul bad lever or muzzle brake/comps or custom bolts.
