I'm going to side with Moby on pretty much all counts Colt but we still need to see where everything is all going.

Debating this on here is not really going to solve anything other than potentially create some hard feelings. None of us want that buddy...[/quote]

Fella's I certainly hope no hard feelings develope. I have great respect for Colt and all members on these boards. We all have our own opinions based on our own expeirences. SALUTE Colt!!!

As I mentioned...this administration has not been straight once on any issue.
The things I speak of are in a "perfect world" Far from what we currwntly have in office.
I can totally understand the current feelings toward the government. I share them also.

It's still far from being "settled" anyway at this point. According to the NRA, they have enough votes in Washington to keep ANYTHING from happening but of course, we ARE dealing with some slippery types who will come at em from EVERY angle so we'll just have to keep a close eye on EVERYTHING and make sure we STAY on our politicians and let them know that just because there is a little "lull" in the action, nothing has changed on OUR part and we are more firm than ever about our convictions...

:twothumbs: Gentlemen I commend all of you for the discussion and the respect you are giving each other on differing opinions. These are the types of discussions we need to have with each other and the uninformed public to help them understand that we support solving the real issues of all criminally violent behaviour. Keep going!

I don't think I articulated that very well. I was not meaning to say that a person should get life for any odd felony, I was saying that with the way things work, a felony conviction IS a life sentence because you lose your rights forever. I think that once a person has paid their debt for their crime, that should be the end of it. A person should be able go back to being a person and posses a firearm at that point. You are right, I agree it does start with parenting, but the criminal system is surprisingly self perpetuating in the way a person is still a criminal when they are released. I like the crap brigade idea. I know those camps for screwed up teens seem to be successful. I saw a show where I think it was the navy seals that took a bunch of hard timers and put them through hell to be divers or something. Either way, what we are doing now is not working.

While background checks are not a problem for me either, I've held a security clearance a few times and have a carry permit, it opens the door to changing criteria for who qualifies for firearm ownership. It is a window dressing for the power to decide who can be armed, based on whatever suits their mood. I see it as another version of Jim Crow laws. Aside from that, there is the matter of privacy that no one should have to surrender, but that is more a matter of principle.

Sharkey, I think Moby and I are carrying on a mutually respectful and constructive discussion. At least I'm not getting any feelings involved for my part. It's a good conversation.

Good deal buddy on the conversation part but I DO have to add, I've met and known a LOT of guys that were in for felonies, some VERY bad men AND some kids that just screwed up - BUT - Just because they have served their sentences - that does NOT mean I think they should be allowed to now own weapons of ANY kind.

ANY felonies involving violence SHOULD carry the full weight of the law AND require them to lose any and all weapons rights for life.

MAYBE felonies of a benign nature can be tabled but as far as I'm concerned, if a heroin addict shoots some guy in the face for dope and then serves 10 years for it, I don't think he would be a good candidate for a new rifle and a concealed carry permit on graduation...

And that is my whole point. If they are so bad they should never have rights, they should not be let back out. Junkie on a murder charge should not get 10 years anyway. If it were me, it would be the chair after working off debt to the victims.

I'm OK with the Illinois style background check..... of 1899! I took this picture from the gun section of a 1900 Montgomery Wards catalog. It is the first evidence of a background check I've been able to find.

The Chicago crime statistics are a good example of what a long history of regulating gun ownership gets you, fear, intimidation, and death.
I would go along with background checks, I get one every 5 years to renew my conceal carry permit, if they were similar to this early example. They would have to be based on the decision of a very local official, the Sheriff is the furthest from me I want this to get.
Colt is exactly right about the abuses our Veterans are dealing with. My Nephew has several friends he served with that fail the check. they quit the Guard but were using counseling services for ptsd. He is afraid if he actually leaves the Guard the same thing will happen to him.
I believe the free and open trade of all weapons is the only way we will maintain the freedom our founding fathers envisioned. If your neighbor is acting irrational and has firearms it is up to you to discuss this with your other neighbors, Law enforcement, or even the person himself and take the necessary action. Personal responsibility is the only way America can function in a free state.

If there was an express line for the chair buddy I'd be with you but caging them all for life just ain't gonna happen.

Hell, if anything, the courts are getting MORE lenient. I'd like to see em all thrown into a hole but that isn't gonna happen either.

Nope. Hoping for people to get locked up for life not only is not the answer, it's not financially feasible for all of US for gosh sakes. Can you imagine paying for all of them for their entire lives and the prisons we would have to build just to house all the idiots serving life sentences? Also, guys serving LIFE are far more dangerous than guys that are actually HOPING to get out someday which means HIGHLY secured prisons - and more money from all of us to do it.

There is no simple answer to this that I'm willing to "put in print" buddy but no felon convicted of ANY crime of violence, OR sex crimes or anything to do with harming ANY other person in any way shape or form should ever be armed LEGALLY. They should be "cured" frankly and put out of our misery...

The best things about prisons in some of the third world areas I've seen is that at least if they SURVIVE their sentence, they REEEEEEEEALLY don't ever want to have to go back. In the US, it's like no big deal which is why we have such a problem with guys committing crimes just to go BACK... They get "institutionalized" and then literally can't stand the thought of living outside so they do whatever it takes to get back. I've busted a few guys with that story...

If our prisons were tougher, at least the desire to go back or at least the lessoned FEAR of going back would be less of an issue..

I see what your saying but they have classified the simple possession of drugs and guns as a violent felony. A nephew got himself strung out on meth and into a bad crowd. When his house was raided he had a 1/4 pound of meth on him and there was an old 870 shotgun in the closet, instant violent felon. They used the "conspiracy" laws to inflate the amount of drug by adding a 1/4 pound every time somebody testified to seeing it, they had him possessing pounds when the 1/4 pound was the most the kid had ever seen. Combined with the bird gun and he got a 20 to life sentence. now in a matter of a few days the drugs had cleared his system and he was one bummed boy, he had just turned 18 and actually started the binge on his birthday. He did get out in 10 years, 5 years later his welding buisness grossed a million bucks. He doesn't drink or do any drugs, just raises his kids and pays his taxes. He deserves to get that old bird gun back and the right to defend his family and self.
This is not an isolated thing, I can go through a dozen cases off the top of my head. They just want fewer people able to defend themselves. If not to harm them then to at least maintain the peoples need of security from them.
