If you can tell us more about what you want out of it, deciding what parts to get and how to set things up is much easier. What do you do most with your rifle? What distance will you shoot at? What do you want out of it? lightweight & compact for easier carry or or a hefty, long, stick for more distance precision? etc.
The only thing lost with an A2 upper is a degree of flexibility with sighting options. It is still a fine, capable, rifle that will serve it's owner well, within that one limitation. Sharkey & Sicso are prime examples of what I speak. Fine, practical rifles that fulfill the shooters needs. I use mine differently (when I can use it at all) and so my rifle is set up accordingly.
If you have difficulty deciding what you should do to get where you want to go, tell us what more about what you want out of your rifle and we can point you in the right direction. If you re going to mount optics, then a flat top is going to work better for that, but as has been said, it is not absolutely necessary unless you want to go long range.
I gotta warn you though. Buying an upper to switch things out is where it all begins. First, you will have the old upper left over whispering to you "build me..build me, don't just leave me like this". Then there is the investment in tools. Since it is just silly to only use them once you'll need to finish that old upper into something to make it worth while. On the other hand, moving all that from one upper to another doesn't quite feel right, so you need to put it all back the way it was and buy new parts for the new upper so it can be its own thing. Switching uppers becomes a hassle after a while, now it's time to build a lower. More parts left over and tools going to waste and the only reasonable thing to do is build another.
We tried to have 12 step meetings to help with this, but it just turned into a gunshow.
"Hi Im 13fcolt and I have a problem..... anyone got an extra grip screw"

"Here's that grip screw you need Colt"
How can I possibly part with this grip screw though. It could be the very FIRST part of my next build... I'm gonna do what NO ONE has ever done and design a totally NEW rifle completely around this one, special, beautiful little grip screw...
Sorry Colt, I've changed my mind.

I see a real interesting evening on the forum shaping up.
I would never even think of taking someones last part. That's the seed part.
Why else would I hoard all these gas tube roll pins, just seed for the next build.
