The picatinny rail on the front handguard can be aligned by adjusting / rotating the handguard a degree or two until the top surface is coplaner.
Problem is all I have are some basic tools, punch's, pliers, brass hammer, I don't even own an armorers wrench or a vise..........eventually I planed on having whatever it takes to change rails and barrels...... maybe eventually will have to come sooner than I thought.
Guess I better start learning that procedure......
It's possible that the upper may be assembled incorrectly. I would have a qualified individual take a look at it to be sure and align the handguard while he's at it.
It came straight from ArmaLite like this so they would be the qualified ones to look at it, I couldn't find a smith around here that would install my flaming pig so I wouldn't trust them on this.
It was test fired for sure, took me about 30 patches to get the bore clean. I haven't fired it but everything looks good and it hand cycles rounds just fine, gas tube is lined up and at the right depth.
The rails have an even space between them, just looks like it needs a bit of rotation. Seems odd that this wouldn't be something they check for, they have to have some sort of check list for this stuff
I read through the tech notes on installing FF handguards but they were no help :banghead:
Spent some hours reading and searching as well as getting advice on forums, looks like it will go back to ArmaLite. This handguard indexes on the barrel nut with pins so I would need a wrench, vise, and receiver blocks to mess with it myself...I just can't haul all that around with me on the job...
I decided to start the break-in process before shipping the upper back to have the rail properly lined up. I made it to 30 rounds, cleaning after every round for 10 then every 2-3 rounds till I hit 30 total and was sick of cleaning. It did start to clean much faster as I went. I noticed the rounds also started working up the target for the first 1/2 then they settled in. This target was at 50 yards, I used my Bushnell elite that is set for my AR-10. Held just between the 7 and 8 ring. Once I get a good trigger it should put out some good groups, the Sig trigger is like dragging a boat anchor down a dirt road.
Just another 5 or 6 hours of cleaning between groups and the break-in will be done.....

This seems a whole lot better and even at 50 yards it's more than acceptable. Installing the Geissele SSA-E trigger, you'll find your groups tighten up and as the break in continues you'll be more than pleased with those 1 hole groups....
ArmaLite fixed the rail issue, lines up perfect now Got the break-in finished this morning, about 3 1/2 hours. The groups didn't improve much but I should have a new SSA-E trigger installed before next Sunday's range trip so we'll see then if the thing will shoot.........I just have to remember to skip the coffee!
