here is the kicker... the company also has on staff one of their competitors to teach another armorers course for POF.

So tell me if that's not letting company secrets out...

And now you know why they had maintained a copy of your course file. I am guessing that the Armalite certified armorer who runs the course was trained in one of your classes.. Welcome to the ethics of the modern corporate world. There is none.

It strikes me that the admin who actually deleted the file is the one Armalite should take issue with, if any.

Having said that, the corporate world is weird. In my current position I develop recipes and techniques that my contract says are the property of the company. I understand that this is standard practice, but it's a fur piece from where I was in drug research. Pure science holds the position that information is meant to be shared, and intellectual property is the property of the individual, not the institution. It really wouldn't matter if it were the other way around, because most times the knowledge is so specialized that few people besides the developer are equipped to understand it.

Were I you I think I'd have a chat with an attorney.

It would be good to chat with an attorney on a few things too. The only down side is being unemployed, I can not afford to even buy him a cup of coffee.

But what I did, is when I was in Afghanistan as a private contractor, I made this course up to teach Afghans for the Presidential Protection Detail in 2009.That is how it all started.

Were you asked to develop a course or did you do it on your own? What was you job description? Would it have included to developing training to do your job.

Its very difficult to 'own' something you developed on company time. If you are getting paid and you develop something on company time then you violated your contract if it had nothing to do with your job, if it did have some thing to do with your job, then you got paid to develop it.

Those that get their names on patents and or share in monies when the company sells something you developed usually have this in writing before they even go to work.

Friend of mine was a chemist and he had in his work contract that he would share in patents and would share in profits if the product was sold. In his case he was given x % and he retired to a very nice lifestyle in his mid 40's...

I developed a technology called 'WLDCAT' (Wide Load Cluster Array Technology) when I was the CTO at a corporation. I had to sit down with the lawyer and hash out patent rights (I was to get credit on the patent). I did not get any post employment rights to use it, nor would they give me any revenue from any potential sale. I agreed as they were not in the computer hw/sw sales business.

Another point in your favor: You developed the course prior to working for them, and that makes it your intellectual property. On the other hand a court might think that by using Armalite material you have "co-mingled" the asset such that it became Armalite property (if that limitation was in your contract). But a lawsuit is expensive, and never a sure thing. It may be better just to let it lie.

A lot of firearms companies are on the move. Remington is going to Georgia and Steyr is in Trussville, AL (Trussville? :-). I think Colt is pulling out of CT. And where did Magpul go? Texas? If you feel adventurous you might consider relocating. I wish you the best.

The new owners seem to be intent on tearing down both employee and customer loyalty.

Seeing how they have treated you is quite infuriating.

They have also made it quite clear that they don't care about longtime customers.

I am not planning to get rid of any of my AR10s because they are great rifles, but these guys really suck.

I know this is late to this thread so how about an update on your situation.

I havent seen Mrraley on this thread since. I am not going to say much, as it is his business, but I know he wasn't unemployed very long, although I believe he is out of the industry. Glad to see he overcame this setback.
