Our prayers to you and yours, for the loss of a great pet and your struggling family members.

You made a better life for the cat, and the cat made life better for and with you. I'm a dog person and have lost several, and it does not get easier but with the realization that we take care of each other in many ways, without conditions. Go to the Humane Society and get another as soon as you can stomach it.(Not trying to sound flippant.)

No, we are not so civilized. From my days as a deputy coroner I would get the on call beeper at 3 AM....from the organ donation companies per a case that was not mine and of which I had no knowledge of, from very unprofessional peoples. It is an actual industry in this country that is rife with fraud and abuse.

The horrific death scenes and helping family members through their processes were relatively simple compared to dealing with the cannibals in that vast industry. State laws vary widely so the best advice I can offer, for your own preparations for death, is to find a competent estate attorney to work through some legal aspects you may be unaware of-tougher than it sounds.

Make your plans and wishes explicit, and share them with and prepare your family members for the probable. Important to communicate this stuff to family; a.) You are not suicidal, but are taking responsibility while still having the capacity to do so. b.) Location of the paperwork if you do not want to get into the specifics. c.) If you do want to donate your remains to some aspect of science and/or organ donation, research the destination(s) and be specific as to who/where.

...and some Psych. advice per estate planning: God's life for us is what's happening while we make other plans. Taking care of the above noted planning, and getting it out of the way, can actually improve your life and better prepare the lives of your survivors. We will live on in the lives of our survivors and our Kingdom of choice, but getting these items off your bucket list will bring more bulls eyes while here.

A tough week. Three weeks ago we had a beloved canine family member start to have trouble moving. My wife took hert to the Vet , not our regular one, and she was misdiagnosed with Arthritis. What they prescribed didn't help so a week later we took her to our regular vet. She diagnosed a herniated disk and put her on steroids and a painkiller. Didn't help much so we went back and she referred us to a vet with specialties in back injuries. He did a myelogram and found what appeared to be a mildly ruptured disk and prescribed strict rest and a mix of pain killers, muscle relaxants and steroids to keep her sedated so it could heal. Monday morning I had driven 300 miles down to the State Capitol to meet with DNR officials on fishery issues, and I get a call from my wife that she has worsened and the doctor wants her in for surgery the next morning.
So after the meeting, which was very positive, I turn around and drive the 300 miles back home, the last 100 miles in four wheel drive in a blinding snowstorm.
The next morning we drive her 50 miles to the vets and she goes in with a good prognosis for a full recovery, although she was really hurting and did not look good. Three hours later the Vet calls with the news that it was a much more serious type two rupture that had involved the whole space in the vertebrae that the spinal cord was in. He had cleaned it out as much as possible but had to cut the surgery short because her heart rate was falling. He was then called off the phone by his assistant. An hour later he called back that despite trying everything he and another vet could, She had passed away.
Like the other posts in this thread say, it is losing a family member. Of all the dogs we have ever had, she was the smartest, the most loving, and the most enjoyable company we have ever had. She will be sorely missed, especially by my son who's dog she was. I had to call him at college and let him know yesterday. That was as bad as hearing the news myself. Here's to you Chili, you were small, but had the biggest heart of any dog I have ever had.

My condolences to you and yours. Losing a pet is so very much like losing close family, nothing but time eases the pain.

Thank you gentlemen. Probably just like all of you, at these sad times you worry more about your wife and kids emotional pain more than your own, and they are getting better and so am I. Again thanks for your sentiments.

Sicsowet, sorry to hear the loss of your family member. We had something very similar happen a few years ago. At the time I had far more questions than answers. I wish you and your family the best in this tough time.
