I know jealousy is a sin but damn I'm sure a sinner! ;)
I just read an article about the Tavor in the online January GUNS magazine, looked very promising.

So you want to be a Sniper, IWI has the scope for you. dial in your round, good out to 2000+ meters, this will change the world of snipers, it does a LOT of stuff to make sure the rd hits where you need it. This is Mil Spec Sniper Grade, comps for weather, has built in laser rangefinder ( they are not saying right now how accurate the laser is, but as they said "you are not gonna miss") and other goodies. Due out in 2014, see it at the Shotshow is my bet...

Why do they call it the Tavor? Look on the skyline and to the right see the mountain with a rounded top, that is Mt Tavor, in the Golan Heights area

LOL, tuff job but someone here had to do it...

OK, lets talk. I have seen the laydown, show the guns and this was my first ever exposure to the 'bullpup' design, albeit I have read and seen them since the 60's IIRC. But having put hands on I have got a whole new perspective.

www.israel-weapon.com/default.asp?catid=...AD85-C4E1E40D0422%7D

Lets get Colt, Rem, Beretta, Ruger etc together tell them to call up IWI and go look see and shoot. I did and I came back a supporter of the bullpup and a rabid fan of IWI Tavor. Try picking up a M 16 platform, putting the buttstock on the end of your nose and shooting then on FA. Now consider this:

Characteristics:

Bull pup configuration.
Optimized ergonomic design.
30 Rds. Magazine capacity.
Body built of high strength impact modified polymer.
Detachable barrel.
Integrated reflex sight directly attached on to the barrel.
Conversion from day optics to night optics is done without the need of re-zeroing.
100% Ambidextrous thus making the use by right or left handed shooters easy.
Has true “OTB” (over-the beach) capability and can be safely fired after being submerged in water and not completely dry.
Designed for Minimum operator and armorer level maintenance, thus reducing maintenance and life cycle costs.
Folding back-up sights that include tritium for night combat.
Very easy field striping into 2 parts.
100% interchangeability with parts of the Tavor family, thus reducing the overall costs of the system.
Equipped with a last round stopper.
All the metal parts of the weapon are corrosion resistant.
Recoil absorbent butt pad for rifle grenade firing.
Comparison tests have proven the Tavor to posses the following significant operational advantages:
• Increases hit probability under fatigue and pressure.
• Superior reliability under extreme conditions.
• Uninterrupted day-to-night switch without re-zeroing.
• Ergonomic design for increased comfort and ease of use.
• Short rifle convenience with long barrel accuracy.
• Right and left handed operability.

18 in bbl for the Assault rifle in a 28 in overall platform, Colt M4, 14.5 in bbl, overall length 30 in You make the call...

NOTE: Word is the IDF will phase out the M 16 and phase in the Tavor over the next 10 years...time for the US to look and look hard IMO

Lets get some discussion going here pro and con

So even a 16 inch barrel would come in at the legal length for a rifle.

Did I read the article correctly, it seemed to say that M-16 magazines fit? That would be a huge plus in getting people to try the platform.

Any mention on cost for the civilian version? Another big factor.

Are they working on any alternative calibers, say 300 blackout or 6.8 SPC ?

Yes, the footprint on this is truly the best of both worlds, shorter than an M4, but has the advantage of the long bbl 18in. Using this weapon was a dream, VERY, VERY intuitive (NOTE I was using the very latest mdl with refinements the earlier ones do not have, minor, but truly a fine tune.

They are working on a 308, but 6.8 is not a consideration at this time and the 300 BLK is not currently on the list but demand could well change that. IWI is drivien by the IDF ( Israel Defense Force) and unlike us they really are in bed together...there is not competition outside of the weapons we provided them.

Cost on the Tavor seems to run all over the place. I THINK(?) MSRP is about $2550, but I have seen them as low as $1500 but my thinking is these are old units. I would say around $2.2k for this mdl more or less.

Yes it accepts the AR mags and yep, big plus...

IDF folks do NOT use slings as we know them. Go back to the T shirt pic and note small hole in center mass of butt stock furthest back. Yes that is where you attach the non-sling, thru the hole. What do they use? Paracord, you make your own. They do this to keep the 'battle-rattle' down....I know you know about that...
