A FORWARD ASSIST ISN'T NEEDED ON A 308 RIFLE IF YOU LOOK AT ALL NATO RIFLES THEY DON'T HAVE THEM SUCH AS THE FN FAL, G3, L1A1, OR EVEN THE CLASSIC M14.THE 308 RIFLE CARTRIDGE IS STRONG ENOUGH IT SHOULDN'T JAM UP AT ALL.
Any auto loader can fail to feed. And it will happen at the worst possible time. My brother can fill you in on all the feed failures in Nam in the early part of the war with AR-15 & M-16's and M-14's too.
I like the FA on an AR type rifle for the ability to SILENTLY lock the bolt if needed. There are times when the ability to be stealth is tactically desirable.

Their catalog does say Forward Assist now.
I'd like to see pictures if anyone finds any of the new setup.
I wonder how this will affect interchangability between pre FA armalites, and future armalites.
The reason AR's have a forward assist at all is because you cannot push on the bolt to close it. Quietly or not.
On the other weapons you cited (FAL, G3, M14) the cocking handle is directly attached to the bolt. If the cocking handle is all the way home, the bolt is closed.
I have completly quit using the forward assist on the ar15s. And I would not even consider using one on the 10. Like crux said, if it doesn't go to battery there is something wrong and a stuck case in the chamber sucks.
From an historical perspective, Gene Stoner was opposed to a forward assist on the AR10 and the AR15. It was built into the AR15 only because the Army insisted on it. Stoner felt that if a round failed to chamber, then something was wrong and needed to be fixed. The last thing you wanted to do was to force the round into the chamber and then risk not being able to get it out. A properly functioning AR10 should not need one; I rather suspect that Armalite is responding to customers who want a FA for whatever reason. The FA has become "standard" on the AR15, and a lot of shooters automatically think it should also be on the AR10.
The original M-16's we carried in Nam did not have forward assists. They also jammed. The magazines were junk.
To re-state my reason for a FA on my AR-10: I want to be able to lock SILENTLY like my bolt guns. I do not want a "gook" to hear me lock, jump up and shoot me!
