Checked out the Armalite web site last night and noticed they are selling AR-10's with forward assists now.

Any comments on this from the group?

Didn't spot any with forward assists. A healthy AR-10 shouldn't need one, the cartridge is beefy enough to run the heavy bolt back, so unless your springs are bad, or the gun is excessively dirty there should be no problem feeding. If a full draw of the charging handle and release won't chamber the round, there's something wrong.

What I like about a forward assist is the ability to feed a round quietly. Release the bolt catch and hold the charging handle while allowing the spring to feed the cartridge as far as possible, SLOWLY. Then use the FA to make sure the bolt is engaged and locked.

No bang-crash noise. ;)

A good point.

On the other hand, if an adversary is close enough to hear an AR-10 being charged, the operator has probably brought the wrong rifle for the job.

An AR-10 just wouldn't occur to me for home/yard defense/CQB, its probably the 2nd to last thing in my cabinet I'd ever consider, beat out only by the M91/30 Mosin Nagant. Then again, the M91/30 has a stout bayonet :)

Now that you mention it I thought I saw the bushmaster BAR-10s with a forward assist. Didn't recall anyone else with it though.

A FORWARD ASSIST ISN'T NEEDED ON A 308 RIFLE IF YOU LOOK AT ALL NATO RIFLES THEY DON'T HAVE THEM SUCH AS THE FN FAL, G3, L1A1, OR EVEN THE CLASSIC M14.THE 308 RIFLE CARTRIDGE IS STRONG ENOUGH IT SHOULDN'T JAM UP AT ALL.
