"Is the clip supposed to be able to be installed and work properly with the bolt closed?"

Yes...sometimes you have to push hard...also try 4 rounds instead of 5...besides...it's a .308 you shouldn't need more than one... Just ribbing you....but try the four....

"I'd like to see Armalite redesign the 5-round clip by using a 10-round clip and then insert a plug so only 5-rounds can be loaded in a 10-round clip."
I know they make one for the M-15....I think it's a twenty rounder...but as for the AR-10 ten round...it would not take alot for you to do it your self....just some patience and a little ingenuity...if you would like....send me a 10 rounder and I will make it for you....

BMS, Are you joking? Only 4 rounds? What if 2 140+ class deer walked out and then 3 hogs? I'd only be able to shoot 4 of them. hahahaha

Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it. I'm pretty handy, so do you have any instructions on how to add a plug to my 10-round magazines? I could try my hand at it first. Come to think of it, I think the AR-10T manual has a section on how to repair/maintain the clip. Maybe I can figure it out from that - don't want to destroy my clips.

Thanks, Jer

That's why you carry a 20 round just in case..... ;)
As for suggestions...well let me fiddle with one of mine and see what I come up with....I will make it as easy as possible...right now I am thinking a piece of 1x of some sort...maybe a 1x4 cut down...and round the edges...so if fits in the spring....Ok...there is on other way to do it too....figure out where the follower stops...and put a screw in it on both sided... then you can always take them out to make it a ten again.....

Funny!!! I haven't worked up the courage yet to pull the trigger. Thought maybe I should have EMS standing by just in case.

I may try that but, instead of the screws, I may use a couple of roll pins that will each go all the way across the clip. This way, the roll pins can be cut to be flush with the sides of the clip and still be removed with a punch. The heads of the screws may protrude too far and jam the clip - have you tried screws?

sound idea EXCEPT.... the pin is most likely going to interfere with the spring.....Try the block in the spring.....I know alot of guys that have done it....or just break down and buy a ten round mag...take it to your most trusted gun smith and have him dent the side of the MAGAZINE....so it will only hold five...permanent five rounder.... ;)
But remember...when out hunting....always carry a 20 just in case..never know when you might run into Zombie Deer.....

If your close to IL. let me know and I will come take care of it... for a fee.

As for the magazine issue... measure down the back spine, drill and insert a short rivet.

I have done this on 20 round magazines to convert them to 10 round magazines and measured down the spine 1 and 7/8".
