Well advertised gun show here in San Antonio 4-5 Feb. Arrived about 11am, doors opened at 9am, close around 6, same for tomorrow.
1) NOT 1 single AR in the house and I walked every single aisle and whose who had big AR-TYPE lay downs I asked, got any AR's, Lowers or other parts...100% NO! Only one outfit told me they had some lowers back at the shop, but did not bring them.Guy said he had 3 bare lowers he did confirm to me they were AR's...yea heard that before.
2) OMG, were they selling guns there or what. Guns any and all were flying off the tables, almost all were paying what was being asked.
3) NUMBER 1 AR TYPE on the tables: STAG Arms, #2- DPMS, #3 Rock River, then Bushmaster. Scatter about was a LOT of what I call ZOMBIE guns, origin is questionable, skull and cross bones logo on frame along with many other variants. Price reflects quality is my guess! Meaning: Cheap don't good, good don't come cheap.
4) Often asked: Why do you want an AR, parts are impossible to come by and they don't fit other guns, their stuff is proprietary no one wants them...(me) YEA, they just want the Zombie junk you are peddling for $699, heck, I have thrown away better boat paddles, thanks but I will keep my real AR!
I remember ditching my CMMG carbine after I heard someone say Poodle-Popper.
Thats when I realized I needed to up my game.
I was looking for .308 or better and eventually found an AR-10 after speaking with a very knowledgeable Shop Owner here in Oklahoma.
Mike Matthews of Gun-World in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
I like his establishment and frequent it because, he stands behind everything that crosses his counter-top. After having spoken with him about my desire to ditch 5.56 and step-up to .308 he knew what I needed. I told him I also wanted the best and not something dubious without support.
Did these guys discuss GunGrabber-Sorros buying DPMS/Remington/Bushmaster? That this family of companies is planning on going proprietary with their weapons, the exact thing they use to criticize Armalite for doing (protecting the work they did reviving the AR10 before it died altogether)? ...one of the biggest and busiest gun stores/indoor shooting ranges here in Savannah is like those guys. They have DPMS AR15's (and similar) going in and out the door like pancakes. They have no 308 winchester guns whatsoever, except one Springfield M1A. I ask about my desire for an AR10, they don't have one, says "hard to get them, when I do it flies off the shelf". Shows me the M1A as if I'm some douchebag who is asking about AR10's but doesn't know what an M1A is... as if I've not considered the most ubiquitous 7.62 NATO gun in history already. Tries to talk me into a DPMS LR308, shows me a quote that's more than I would pay online for NIB. Has half a dozen NIB DPMS AR15's leaning behind the counter that just came in, being processed for display. Says here, check this out, pulls one out of the box, pulls the charging handle back to check chamber... charging handle gets stuck. Defective NIB weapon. Spends ten minutes with his coworker trying to figure out why the most crucial function of the gun is stuck and not working... basically gets distracted from our conversation altogether. Little did he know I knew all about the choices before me, and "DPMS" is pretty much the main filter I put in search engines to "ignore" in my search results. I wonder why. Ask about Glocks. "We don't carry Glocks because Glock demands we use their retail pricings, we try to beat anyone's price and that's just unacceptable to us...". They have four or five display cases full of pistols I don't want. They have so much business you can hardly get anyone to help you with anything... and your screwed if you are seeking advice on anything involved. Oh and I remember one of the other things he says... "Armalite makes good weapons... but it's all about if you want to pay more for a name..." or something like that. Lemme get this straight, Armalite can't keep their AR10's made fast enough, you can't keep them on hand because someone is always ready to buy one, they have industry leading customer service on weapons that are very high quality, and they do large government contracts proving they are a solid company that's here to stay... they don't allow themselves to get bought out by billionaire gun grabbing scum bags like Sorr
os, AND they offer lifetime warranties on their weapons to the original owners... even guarantee the accuracy of many of their offerings... some at 1" MOA... and the two or three hundred dollars I'll save by buying a mass produced "bargain" rifle is based on what? And even a highly popular line of pistols that pretty much everyone sells for the same price they've been for ten or fifteen years while other pistols keep going up and up more... and you don't carry them. Is there anything else you can't do for me? Never mind, I'll just go to the little hole in the wall Gun Shop (it's name literally lol) where the guy sells whatever customers want and whose favorite weapon he owns in an Armalite AR10 carbine that shoots sub-MOA and takes whatever time neccessary to talk with me... I've learned something in my 40 years, everywhere you go you can find good people... but more often than not you find a bunch of assclowns with more money and good fortune than they deserve...

Another Armalite Myth! The guy at Atlantic Arms told me the same thing. He stocks two carbines, but says he can't get the rifles. That's real funny because Buds and Impact have them on the shelf.
In 1988 I tried to buy an F-250 diesel stick. I had three dealers tell me they didn't have one. I said I didn't ask if you had one, I asked if you'd order one. They said they didn't get sticks because nobody wanted 'em. I said you got a customer standing right in front of you. They tried to talk me out of a stick truck "cause it's so difficult to back a trailer" (really?), so I told 'em when I grew up only girls drove automatics. They didn't exactly refuse to order one, but it seemed like the option just wasn't on the table! The fourth Ford dealer I tried had no trouble at all getting an F-250 diesel stick.
I have never had any trouble getting Armalite parts or guns. I don't know where the myth comes from, but from where I stand that's all it is.

Small world. I know Mike as well.

That would be an FN FAL, Jeff. It wasn't referred to as the free world's right arm for nothing.
And if you're having trouble finding Armalite parts, head up to Killeen. It's by Ft Hood (Lots of door kickers and face shooters stationed there), should be some gun shops there that carry Armalites or be able to order them. Funny, you'd think a city with Lackland AFB and Ft Sam Houston would have a few gun shops that cater to the military crowd and carry a broader selection of ARs.
