Well there I am over on some forum when some guy says he is SOCOM US ARMY. He went on about it spent 30 years in the community. Really, that is a long time long time to stay in the community especially back in those days. Only fairly recently has SF become a branch. Up till then it was the kiss of death to careerists to remain in SF.

So Mr SOCOM starts talking about his heroic career. Then I asked some questions, questions anyone in the community would certainly know...he has not logged in since, been several weeks now, don't expect him to another phony got flushed.

TIP: Prior to about 73 all the folks in the Army had a serial number, this was NOT their SS #. During the time of the draft, draftees serial number had a prefix: "US" Those that joined the prefix was "RA" (this applied to the enlisted ranks).

I have NEVER met nor heard of anyone EVER forgetting their serial number. So if you come across some Vietnam vet talking smack, just ask him his serial number...I have FLUSHED a LOT on forums, bars, parties etc with that question.

Ran into one like that on another forum myself, 24 years in the 1st/75th Rangers and a SSG.
A few questions later and he disappeared. I wasn't trying to root him out or anything, just curious how one stays in one unit like that so long, 24 years of that pace would seem to require superpowers!

Never have understood people who can't accept who they are and feel a need to pretend to be something they are not. Like Cowboy and JT inferred, anyone in SOCOM for that many years would have payed an incredible physical price. Read about Navy Seals and Army SF in their early thirties and the damage their bodies have sustained. Guess those people are just not comfortable in their own skin.

You should know. Yea thats short tour work for the young and single.

I like to let them talk, maybe ask a few questions about their exploits and the more they talk the more they lie. LOL one guy posted a pic of him on opns in An Lao Valley...AND then I nailed him. I paid my dues in An Lao and knew it like the back of my hand. What is unique about it is that is farmed by the Vietnamese. It has a small river that runs thru it and it feeds rice paddies, there is no jungle, no banana trees just a flat land with rice paddies and several tunnel complexes at the base of the mountains. He never logged on again either.

We had a coffee/lunch group that met several times a week. A new guy was a Navy SEAL or so he said. With each meeting the stories got bigger and better. I finally go a good friend, Tom, a Navy SEAL 3x tours in Vietnam to come to lunch. There were about 8 or 10 folks that got together on the Friday lunch meeting.

Tom HUNG him out to dry and between the two of us ( I had never mentioned I was in Vietnam) we put the guy in tears, I mean crying like a baby, please forgive me. Then he admitted what he did in the AIR FORCE. He worked in Special Operations which handled movie stars and sports stars. The AF had an assortment of guys who got drafted that went into SO. And they had a traveling Basketball team with a players from a lot of different Pro teams and they guys would go around the world putting on demo games with and for the soldiers. This guy was the team equipment manager... :rotfl:

I GOOFED UP THE FORMAT YOURS ABOVE, MINE BELOW

I got out in 1972 and my serial number was US (SSN) then reupped and it was RA (SSN). Maybe I misunderstood your comment, but certainly my serial number was my SSN. Just saying.

BTW, good flushing. I had an ex-partner pos who claimed he was a veteran but I found out he was in ROTC and washed out of that. LOL.

Not sure of the exact date of the switch over from serial number to SSN, somewhere around 72 I am thinking as went I was comissioned in '73 I was to sue my SSN. My guess is when they went from draft to the lottery????

I was drafted and my was US 54761125

Maybe, it was SSN in 1969, when did the draft start 1968 (I can't remember anymore)?

After some research I found it:

"Social Security number as an identification number for the Army and Air Force since July 1, 1969, the Navy and Marine Corps since January 1, 1972, and the Coast Guard since October 1, 1974."

I went in the Army after July 1, 1969; hence, the social being my serial number. By the way, I still know the number but won't put it out there for obvious reasons.

There is no x index of serial number to SSN, it was just a conversion and applied to everyone, no need to x index...
