Well I have been thinking of a build, not sure if I go AR 15 or AR 10, I have both now. I do have a brand new unfired Bushy, then I have my AR 10.

The Bushy is sweet, ordered it from Bush, fluted 14.5" bbl w/AK47 brake. Its light and my wife can use it, but she has a Ruger Ranch Rifle in 5.56 that she likes. Not sure I can pass on my AR 10 to her as its just too heavy for a woman.

AR 10T is nice, low mileage in fact only 40 rds of break in down the tube...my hog hunts have not produced any hogs so it remains untested I guess until there is more hogs on the ranch...

POINT: been doing a lot of research on builds. I come up with a lot of info, ton of chatter, bunch of low buck builds and then you get into high quality nail drivers. One name pops up a lot, MEGA megaarms.com

Their stuff is about as flawless as it comes and have some amazing offerings in both AR 15 and AR 10 flavors. Now they sell complete guns so its builders heaven.

Anyhow am just musing as my B day is coming up and wife is generous with allowing me to do stuff.

Are you going to go through the tax stamp hassle and get a suppressor for it? If so an adjustable gas block and a piston system might be worth looking at. Length of barrel? Target weight? Adjustable stock? Lots of things toconsider.

My thought is to go with a custom 18" bbl SS, fluted...I just think and all my research tells me the 18 is a GREAT compromise between 16 and 20, in fact as good as you can get! In my mind would see a 14, 18, 22 as being the better selection for off the shelf weaponry.

As for the tax stamp, dunno, never had a suppressed, do I think well do I need it??? Acutally I have been thinking about getting a FFL.

I like to think what I can do with this: megaarms.com/maten/receiver-sets/billet-...er-set-nickel-boron/

Suppressors aren't a matter of need/want. It's a matter of getting one (or more) while you still can, regardless of the wait time.

Getting an FFL (And for suppressors/SBRs/Full auto you'll need a Class III FFL) isn't as easy as it used to be. The ATF wants you to have an actual store front and a EIN or DBA at a minimum these days.

Have you thought of alternate calibers for your new build? Particularly as it pertains to .308, there's a bunch of calibers out there based on the .308 case that would work with the AR architecture.

I have the EIN and other stuff, I own a viable company and PAY taxes on it as I noted yesterday when I sent in my payment!

Just never thought about the suppressor, but something to consider.

I have not thought about alt calibers, something worth looking at for sure if I decide to build

Leb is the go to guy when it comes to suppressors and tech questions, my only comment is alternate caliber availability. .308/7.62x51 is always going to be here. Unless you have the ability and motivation to form cases for another cartridge yourself, or spend the extra money for factory loads that might be a consideration. What I have seen of some of those 308 based rounds is impressive in terms of ballistics. Cowboy, as an engineer you probably would have the attention to detail to build a very precise rifle out of components to meet your needs and preferences. A person like me where my mechanical aptitude is only moderate is probably better off getting as close to what I want off the shelf and leaving modifications to a minimum needed to make it what I want. Although I am contemplating either an AR15 or 300 Blackout build myself as a learning experience.

Another issue to consider is alt calibers insofar as they are mostly unproven except the .300 blk. The rest just do not have enough rds down the pipe to establish a good performance and user review curve. I will most likely stay with the .308 or 5.56, its a toss up for now, the research stage.

This would be a one time one off build, I REALLY am impressed with MEGA products, but never laid eyes or hands on. The reviews are there and nothing but great, finding some for sale not so easy, but out there and none of them are low buck...many $5000 and beyond.

I do a ton of research before I pull trigger...

I've handled a couple MEGA builds at gun shows. They were decked out and pricey but had a nice fit and finish, real tight upper-lower fit.

The latest issue of Recoil has a big write up on a couple of AR makers, Mega and 2 Vets Arms.

...my hog hunts have not produced any hogs so it remains untested I guess until there is more hogs on the ranch...

Dig a 6x6x4 hole, throw a bushel of apples or a couple of watermelons in it and wait. Also, the best time to hunt pigs is night time, especially with a moderate southwestern summer just around the corner.

After you shoot the pig, do you throw some wood in the hole, throw the pig back in, and have a pig roast on the spot? I will bring the BBQ sauce.
