There is nothing inherently wrong with a polymer lower. I have them on two of my AR15s. I did these two as lightweight builds with pencil barrels. Perfect for the wife and my 9yo son.
Like Lizardette said, it would be a fantastic choice for a lightweight carbine build.
I wanted to see how light I could get an AR15 build and still have a weapon that was still... usable. Like, I wasn't going to use a low-mass bolt carrier because it doesn't allow for the use of a forward assist. I was thinking an 11" pencil barrel. Not a long range gun, but I bet I could have gotten it down to around about 5lbs.
There was an ar15 build some years ago using a hacked up cavarms lower, pencil barrel, and trimmed down slick side upper. I think the final weight was a tich over 3lbs loaded.
The problem with most plastics is their inability to suffer wear in high stress and abrasive conditions. Plastics are just not metal and its one thing to use them in low stress situations but if they want to see reality, then build out about 250 or so and issues them to a straight leg Infantry company...or maybe a Infantry Basic Training company and see how they perform.
I have seen some high speed fotos of Glocks and YES they do in fact distort when fired.
