What I can't quite figure out is if everyone is out of stock on most everything and not accepting backorders, why are they not answering the phone? I even tried email and still no response. With that said, how can everybody be out of everything all the time when almost no one was accepting backorders and the manufactures are working overtime? Something is not right with this picture. My local store had 3 forty foot containers full of ammo and it is all gone. They manufactures told him they are only accepting orders for 2014. Who is buying all this stuff?

This is modern business 101- Supply and Demand complicated by government policy.
If you are a manufacturer of guns and or ammunition, you have optimized your production to meet current demand flow. If your demand triples, you can: 1. Spend or borrow money to purchase capital equipment to meet that demand, but you better have sales over the future to pay those loans or shareholders back, which means increased demand better continue, or you have problems. 2. Increase order delivery times and perhaps increase prices., but don't add manufacturing capacity. If you are faced with a government who wants to ban or restrict your product, this makes more business sense than going out and making a capital outlay that might cause bankruptcy if those restrictions go into effect. Until the political climate clarifies itself, I doubt if you see any dramatic jump in manufacture and availability of modern sporting rifles and their prime calibers, .223/5.56 or .308/7.62x51, or the Russian calibers. Manufacturers need a secure business environment to risk adding to their capital equipment costs. That won't happen until they have some confidence in what future firearm regulations are. They will max out current production lines, but that is about it.

Who is buying it? Watch Doomsday Preppers on the Nat Geo channel. The survivalist movement of the 1970's was very small potatoes compared to the current Preppers movement. I would guess most of us have become Preppers to some extent, in that I think most people are realizing they have to take personal responsibility for their survival in some cases instead of relying on the government.

This was posted on Facebook yesterday by Valley Guns II. Don't know who he is, a friend passed it on.
:banghead: Attention F.B. fans: to follow will be several IMPORTANT Info updates about the status of the gun industry currently, followed by an INVENTORY UPDATE: 1) We traveled to Texas for Industry meetings concerning the shortages, here's what we were told. Smith & Wesson-is running at Full capacity making 300+ guns/day-mainly M&P pistols. They are unable to produce any more guns to help with the shortages. RUGER: Plans to increase from 75% to 100% in the next 90 days. FNH: Moving from 50% production to 75% by Feb 1st and 100% by March 1. Remington-Maxed out! Armalite: Maxed out. DPMS: Can't get enough parts to produce any more product. COLT: Production runs increasing weekly...bottle necked by Bolt carrier's. LWRC:Making only black guns, running at full capacity...can't get enough gun quality steel to make barrels. Springfield Armory: Only company who can meet demand but are running 30-45 days behind. AMMO: Every caliber is now Allocated! We are looking at a nation wide shortage of all calibers over the next 9 months. All plants are producing as much ammo as possible w/ of 1 BILLION rnds produced weekly. Most is military followed by L.E. and civilians are third in line. MAGPUL is behind 1 MILLION mags, do not expect any large quanties of magpul anytime soon. RELOADERS!!!! ALL Remington, Winchester, CCI & Federal primers are going to ammo FIRST. There are no extra's for reloading purposes....it could be 6-9 months b/f things get caught up. Sorry for the bleek news, but now we know what to expect in the coming months. Stay tuned, we'll keep you posted. To follow is our inventory update for 1/26/13. Please share this info with your shooting buddies. Shoot safe

:censored: I was looking at a website that had some PMC 7.62x51 for sale tonight, debating whether to order it, when literally in front of my eyes the product was removed from the screen. I assume it was sold out. I have never had that happen.

I think we can blame some of the problem on "Just In Time" (JIT) manufacturing. It's a way to keep inventory low, but not a good way to deal with increased demand.

:I-agree: JIT is a system built on predictability. Throw an unpredictable panic into the system, it gets overloaded. A thought: with possible defense cuts looming, the potential is there for the pendulum to swing the other way in a year or so, with excess capacity, and surplus, making for a very competitive market perhaps.

When dealing through my reloading supplier, i was told that its going to get tougher to find certain flammable ammunition components (powder and primers). I was told that the ships that imports powders for Czech republic and Australia used to carry 2 containers. Recently the U.S goverment put importation restrictions on such containers and limiting each ship to carry only 1 container. I cannot get components to reload for my Springer 45-70 or my 300 savage as fast as i used to be able to.
