Welcome Kew, looks like you have the title for earliest basic right now. So what did U guys use for a basic rifle in 74 M-14 .... musket ahh just kidding, good to see another vet.

What a bunch of young pups. Ft. Ord, October 1969 Basic Training. And, yes we used the M14 for small arms training. Did switch to the M16 for Advanced Infantry Training, also at Ft. Ord.

Had they completely changed over from the Blunderbuss to the M14 by then or were there still some in use for urban combat? :laugh:

In the Army at that time, the blunderbuss had largely been replaced by the M79 grenade launcher with flechette rounds. I believe the blunderbusses were passed on down to the Marines to replace the early M16s the Army rejected and the Corps snapped up with not good results.
