Well since I named this thread "need some input" I have a feeling that it is going to be a long thread....someday...LOL

New question,

To Cannelure or not to Cannelure, that is the question. My 150gr FMJ (hornady) has them, so seating the bullet it quite easy, figured the best for a Nooby like me, I picked up some Hornady 168gr BTHP Match, but they don't have the cannelure, so it will be a fun time to seat them and alot of work probably at least for me...LOL
So any input on this one guys....all voices please be heard....LOL What do you use and which do you like. OH and do you crimp, almost forgot.

Cannelure: Personally I don't care, if they are plinky rounds. For accuracy rounds I don't use them.

Crimping: Semi-auto yes, bolt action no or light crimp.

Here we go again,,,,

I know I posted a thread on Lee's customer service, but this is something I need to know if anyone else has had a problem with....I know Edge said he uses the same one, or did, The Lee Perfect Powder Measurer. I was loading some shells yesterday, and as I was charging the shells I checked my powder load,,about every ten shells, anyway as I checked the load I was almost 1.5 grs shy, so I went back and check them all, the ones that I was charging, got twenty already crimped and done... ....and some of them where almost 2 grs short....most where ok but I ended up weighing ever load....what a pain. Anyone else have those kinda problems, I am using "stick" powder (IMR) and I know "ball" powder will meter better but this was ridiculous...I have weighed out loads and checked every 5 and they all turned out ok....So any thoughts would be appreciated or comments as to if anyone has had the same bad day syndrome with loading shells...

Well since this has become, for the most part, a general discussion thread... I will post this question here...

I need some input as to reloading .45 shells. I soon will have every thing I need to crank up my Pro 1000 and get to loading my .45 shells....I just need some ideas on;;;;;;

1) powders.....will be using 200 to 230 gr bullets, mainly for range shooting and target stuff....have the "good stuff" for home defense.
I am looking for something that meters well and burns clean...

2) what are some loads that you use in yours, I have my manual, but a little input never hurts....right.

I know that it is not "rifle" rifle related, but I know some of you do reload your own pistol shells....
Thanks in advance....

Ok, new questions.....How long do you tumble your brass, what kinda of media do you use (and why) and what polish do you use...(also why)....just got me a hand-me-down from my father-inlaw...it is a Lyman Turbo 1200 and works pretty good...just need to get some ideas on how long and what to use in it...
Thanks for any and all input.. :)

I got this stuff from RCBS that is a liquid case wash and use the RCBS Sidewinder tumbler. I started this about 15 years ago and I've never even considered going back to the dusty old corn cob or walnut crap. It washes them in a liquid wash. They come out all shinny, you just rinse them in hot water and dry them with a hair dryer. No more checking flash holes for particles. Works great.

I use a Midway tumbler bought back in the 90's, and still have the original corn cob media that I bought with it. Also got some walnut shell media that I bought at my local Harbor Freight store. I can still use the corn cob media even after all these years by adding about 2 ounces of "paint thinner" (mineral spirits) bought in the paint section of Walmart in a gallon jug. After about 2 hours tumbling, the darkest brass comes out shiny and new-looking. I have some media with polish in it, but since discovering the paint thinner, I never use polish anymore. I always let it air out a litle while before priming or anything. This also removes sizing lube quite well. I still use oil-type lube because I can't seem to make One-Shot work.

Duck, I have seen and heard of those...but that would require buying a whole new set up, and if I was going to go that route, I would get the new Hornady sonic cleaner....but thanks for sharing... :)

Mtrmn..."paint thinner" now that is a new one...not sure how that would affect the primers and such...but hey if it works...I think I will stay with the traditional for now...on the lube, again I hear stuff about the one shot...I have a can and haven't used it yet...might use it for the bicycle chain or something at this rate...try using Lee's lube...it is water soluble abit messy but it works great on the .308 cases...I haven't had any issues with yet.
Thanks for sharing though...I appreciate it both.. B)

I see a look of shock and worry on your face so let me clarify a bit on the paint thinner. I use a normal vibratory tumbler similar to the one you said you had. I fill it to capacity with media/brass, then add a MAXIMUM of about 2 ounces (I'm guessing here, 2 tablespoons max?) of the paint thinner. As the media vibrates/circulates, it all gets just damp enough with the thinner so that it just darkens the color of the media a little. I do NOT tumble my brass in a liquid if you misunderstood my post. Yes, it could possibly affect primers if I took the brass straight out of the tumbler and primed it immediately, but usually by the time I'm ready to prime the thinner has long ago evaporated. I just wait at least an hour as a failsafe measure.

When your media gets old enough to where it takes twice as long as it used to in order to clean your brass, paint thinner will rejuvenate it indefinitely and it'll clean better than ever. As stated before, I still use corn cob media that came with my tumbler bought back in the early 90's and I'm a volume reloader so it's seen multiple thousands of cases.

As for the 1-shot lube, I've heard such wonderful things but none of them have ever materialized in real life. Every now and then I break it out again, read the instructions and follow them to the letter, and wind up sticking case after case in my dies.
Therefore, I size all my bottleneck cases on my single stage press then tumble to remove lube before proceeding to my Dillon and loading them up from there. The paint thinner cuts that lube like nobody's business. :)

I don't see any problem with it. I've heard of others doing this also.

Just keep brass away from ammonia. They don't like each other!
