I've got a question for Edge. Going back to page 1 of this topic where he mentions checking the cases for pressure problems. I reload for my .308 r-25. Currently I'm using 42gr. Varget with 180gr. sierra spitzers and 210federal primers. Not just with this load but with several other loads also i have noticed many cases being dimpled around the shoulder of the case. What would cause this?
Sorry about that. The cases are deformed after firing. I haven't reused any of the deformed cases. Accuracy isn't great either and the chamber is clear and smooth. I will post a pic when I get a small enough image. Thanks.
I saw your pics in the gallery, I may be off in left field on this, but it looks like you are getting those from the locking lugs...I think you have a feeding problem....does it do it to any and all shells?
BMS
Yes, I believe your correct. It has done it to many cases. The dimples go all the wa around the shoulder in most instances. Am I correc in assuming the cases are junk?
My guess would be that the cases are being damaged upon ejection. They are probably hitting the deflector at the shoulder and being dimpled.
Does it happen on all the cases? Or is it random?
I'm hesitant to agree with the lugs dimpling, mainly because the brass in the magazine is still cool and hard, where as the brass being ejected is hot and is more susseptable to being deformed (or dimpled in this case).
From the picture I would say that you can still fire those cases. The dimple will be pushed out upon the next firing.
I don't know Edge, from the picture it looks like there are more than one per shell, and from what Faceman said about it going all the way around....don't think the deflector can make that many dimps.
FaceMan, chamber a fresh shell out of the mag, full bolt release, then very easy, eject it "slowly", see if there are marks on the shoulder, this should give you an idea. I would say if you get marks, the check the shell follower in the mag to see if it is binding up and see if you can see any brass on the lugs. Also I would check the inside of the chamber where the shoulder meets it..you may have some gunk in there.... you may have to take off the barrel, as a last resort. How old is the rifle......???

Dang Edge, I am getting old....I didn't even think about the length of the case..or the Over All Length...DUH on me...LOL considering how OCCD I am about mine....
BMS
my case overall length is 2.0 in. It doesn' happen to every case, but most, only the last time I went shooting. I put 110 rounds through it and about 45 dimpled. The dimples go all the way around on most but not all cases. I just finnished loading some new rounds so I'll give the feed/eject process a try and see what happens tonight. I'm using a Lee case length gauge and I'm measuring every finnished round at 2.8-2.812 in.
Thanks again.
