Hey AR-10 dudes out there.........I am new to this site.....looks like a great site to really get into "The Rifle"...... here goes. Guns are a hobby of mine...have been for many years....in saying that....this is my first "Black" assault style rifle. I have shot a buddy of mine's AR-15 many times....great gun! I bought my AR-10 five years ago.....flat top....20" barrel....match trigger. Great gun up until the past year. I am having a failure to eject problem big time! The rotary bolt will not properly eject the spent brass quick enough...next live round jams. I am just sick about this malfunction........I love this gun! I won't go into all my gun credentials...I will just say...I do have enough sense to properly "break-in" a firearm.... I am a 1911 pistol dude ...I know how to take them apart in my sleep....in saying that....when I first got my AR-10, I cleaned the bore, wiped down the bolt and went to town with about 100 rounds of factory .308....wow....what an experience!!! I think I may be part of the problem though....I did not properly take the gun apart and degrease everything...my bad. I have been reluctant to take the rotary bolt apart..... The gun is currently in the shop with a gunsmith buddy of mine and he is taking it down "all the way". Sorry for the long message...my question is this....are these guns that sensitive to needing through "cleaning" of the rotary bolt after each and every outing. My bad...if that is the case. Hopefully....my gunsmith buddy will get my "baby" back in working order. (He did tell me the ejector is okay...the bolt is just real dirty) This is a $1500 gun...I can not have this gun jamming. It cost me a second wild boar this year....after I popped the first piglet...the gun jammed...not good! Any expert comments out there in AR-10 land would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

The only real cleaning I give my rifle is the bolt carrier and bolt.

Just like the slide of a 1911 the bolt needs to be very clean and have plenty of lube. I use the Mil-Comm grease on the bolt carrier and she runs like a Formula-1 engine.

I had a FTE problem with a 1911 and found it was not enough lube in the right places. Maybe that could be your problem.

I feel your frustration.
I was a GM and served as an armorer when I was in the Navy.
I was a fanatic about the pieces in my care.
I was guilty of over cleaning.
Contrarily I was guilty of over lubing as well.
Never had a weapon jam or fail to feed or extract.
I contribute the success to overlubing.
Don't be afraid to take anything apart.
If you can take it apart you can get it back together!
Just be ready to catch any plungers or springs that want to go flying!
I've recently started using Lubriplate 130-A Grease.
Its pure Magic!
The difference in the action is Night Vs. Day.
Can't say enough about it.
Hope you get your baby back soon.

Thanks.......good advice......I have a buddy that is going to supervise me the next time I take it way down......bolt and all. I had a bad experience taking a Ruger MKII apart.....spring loaded bolt is tricky.......I do agree.....I would rather over lube than not use too little lube.

I think you ought to get your buddy a fifth of Jameson Irish Whiskey when he shows you how to take care of your rifle. If you were shooting a Glock and had failures to eject I would say you were limp wristing it. Try some some mil-tech grease.

You made me laugh.......you have a good point about the Jamison's.....in my buddy's case it would probably be a bottle of Crown Royal. I will say the only limp wristed shooter in my family is my blond wife.....still my Glock 17 works like a charm. I am learning about my AR-10 each and every night I get on this forum. I am a 1911 guy....once you know all the little secrets to them....they purr.....no jams. I just did not realize I needed to lube this weapon to the degree I am hearing on this forum.......Bob Downey has cleared a lot of my questions up.....many thanks to him. I don't like AK's.....but ....all my AK freaky friends out there keep bragging about not having to lube them.....throw them in the mud and they still fire......makes me reconsider my position on the 7.62x39 round......i just always loved the .308 platform. Thanks

Make sure you keep that Kel-Tec and that TRG Glock 17 lubed so they work when you need them.

You can count on that..........I love my Glock 17 about as much as my AR10.......I have a 30 round extended mag for my Glock......with my standard 17 round clip......that gives me 47 rounds of 9mm......got to love it!!

"I don't like AK's.....but ....all my AK freaky friends out there keep bragging about not having to lube them.....throw them in the mud and they still fire......makes me reconsider my position on the 7.62x39 round.."

You never forget that Klang-klang-klang...
Then the vip-vip-vip and funny oil can popping sounds of the ACFT fusalage takeing hits.
While most of us have a grudging respect for the AK it leaves much to be desired in accuracy and engagement envelope ratings.
Hence, why I can remember the Klang-klang-klang.
While it may be real tolerant of being poorly maintained its not my first choice in the field.

Your AR-10 has already thrown several hundred rounds.
And it will throw countless thousands more.
It is well designed and made to exacting specs.
Your AR will outlast any AK.
Since it is in 308 you will dominate any engagememnt.
Your .308 has twice the range and more penetration of obstructions than a AK round.
They might try to hide...:woohoo:
