Thanx for finding the helpfull info for me don't usualy do that to others , but am doing it, so once again thanx :silly: This is my first atempt at removing this amount of cosmoline and what a chore, no wonder I got the rifle so cheap, no one else at the sale even wanted to touch it( like cleaning the wax out of the kids ears that the ex could't do for the last couple of years!) As far as I can tell this rife has beeen in this state since it was sold as a CMP rifle in the 50's man I love my 06's can't waint till we get the weather to shoot at the range again :P asking for advice sine I did't want to do any harm to the wood (hate it when that happens) historic value falls into play on this rifle's value and don't want to compromise  maybe I should just leave it the way it is :S but don't really beleive in that

I've got my scope and rings, cleaning kit and a case of federal GM match in 168 on the way from ammo to go ($214.00 delivered for 200 rd ). Now all I need is my rifle. I have a coyote on my hit list. He has been picking off my chickens. He's in trouble when my ar 10 shows up. The two times I've seen him he's been somewhere between 200-300 yds. That would be a real stretch for my old 30-30.

I have a question for the more experienced AR10 shooters on the board. I have chosen the 10A4CBSF. How much accuracy and max effective range have I lost by choosing a 16" carbine? It is a stainless barrel, so Im hoping for 1 MOA. I cant find any ballistics for 16" compared to 20 or 22" barrels. When a manufacture states muzzle velocity what lenght barrel is it based on? Thanks in advance for your replies.

First, congrats on the rifle. I'm sure it'll give you years of service and satisfaction. You don't really lose any accuracy by going with a 16" barrel. There's a school of thought that says you actually gain a little accuracy from the shorter barrel because of the lower amount of barrel whip once the barrel warms up.

As far as range, there's about 200 FPS difference between a 16" barrel and a 20". 168gr FGMM has an MV of about 2682 FPS from a 20 inch barrel. From a 16 inch barrel, it would be right around 2482 FPS. An AR10 with a 16 inch barrel is effectively a 600-800 yard gun, though 800 is pushing it since the bullet is going transonic at that point. I've seen videos of shooters taking a .308 AR w/16" barrel out to 800 yds accurately, but I've never done it myself or seen it done in person.

Aside from that, much of the range and accuracy is determined by the ammo and optics/optics mount selections, as well as the skill and experience of the shooter.

To help deal with your song dog problem, look at the area it/they use to come to your coop. Then establish known distance landmarks in reference to your shooting position. This will help you make quicker sight corrections for a center mass hold, based upon your scope's zero. If possible put a stick with a rag out in your engagement area, this'll help you with your wind adjustment, if any.

LebbenB, thank you for your knowledge and advice. you have reassured me of my rifle selection . my chicken problem is over for now. they finished off the last four yesterday. Two were left dead near the coop, the other two were taken. It makes me think it may of been dogs not coyotes. The ground is too hard to leave tracks. That is the first time they killed and left the birds lay. I started with 24 hens. I will get more chicks in the spring. Hopefully my AR10 will be here by then.

My rifle has arrived. It is a true pleasure to shoot. The only problem I've had was mounting my scope. I started out with leupold high rings, they were not high enough to clear the hand guard. I went to the local sporting goods store and bought wever extra high rings. They clear the hand guard barely but would not let me add my butler creek covers. I ordered a 1/2 in. riser that allows for the covers but now I have more of a jaw weld than a good cheek weld. I think I'm going to try the armalight high mount and just live with it if it wont allow for the covers. I've set up an empty washing machine cabinet to attach targets to at 100 yards in my pasture. I put a couple of sand bags on an old picnic table, it makes for a nice little walk out the door home range. Ive got room to go out to almost 300 yards but for now 100 is where I have been shooting. After mounting the scope, without any bore sighting, I only had to adjust about 3 in. up and 3in. right to get to zero. It shoots consistant 1 in. groups. anything outside of 1 in. is my fault. I love this rifle.

I've remounted my Nikon with the ArmaLite high mount. It's just right. Good cheek weld and room for the Butler Creek covers. I should of went with the ArmaLite from the start and saved all the aggrivation and money I spent on the other mounts. I traded the other sets of rings and riser to a local gun shop for a couple of boxes of Black Hills ammo. I had no other use for the mounts and there is never enough ammo. I went out today to zero my new set up. I should of saved the box of ammo, it was so windy I couldn't get any good groups. I did get to witness an aerial drama. At first I thought it was a black bird harassing a hawk, which is a pretty common sight around here. As they got closer I saw that it was a bald eagle chasing a goose. The goose was keeping about a 6 foot lead over the eagle. He was making quick turns just when he needed to to keep in front of the eagle. I didn't get to see how it turned out because the chase went out of sight with the goose still ahead. I was cheering for the eagle, I hope he caught his meal. Back to my scope mount, it is the 1" high mount and my prostaff has a 1" tube but the rings don't completly close to each other there is a 1/16" gap between each of the edges. I tightened the screws until the allen wrench provided with the mount started to bend. Is it normal to have a gap like that?
