The M14 thing works well because about everything is usgi complaint with the exception of some chicom parts.
With the AR10 it's different. Armalite uppers and lowers are only compatible with other Armalite and Noveske. The other 7.62 platform rifles are not always complaint between manufacturers. Pivot pin locations, barrel threads, rail heights, magazine compatibility. A lot of it is propitiatory, that makes brand identification pretty important.
So what is the intended use for your 7.62 platform rifle? Long range target work, plinking?
After reading more and more about the platform and your comments it amazes me how different many of the mfgs. are. I guess everyone wants to have their own "niche" if you will and stand out in some small way. The similarity of the AR platform is one of the things that make it so popular, being able to interchange parts with most if not all of the different mfgs.
My intended use is some competition target work and home protection if needed.
I expect much from this rifle from all I have read and been told. All I can say it has it's work cutout for it to make an impression on me. I look forward to an M14 vs. semi-auto mag fed .308 AR type rifle. I hope that description don't piss anyone off and if it does well just bite your lip or something.
As far as the M14 goes, I have owned ChiCom variants and they were ALL inferior to my preban SA /all USGI parts. I heard about how great the forged receivers were etc. Buy and use all of them you like, I just have a problem shooting something made in a communist country. My American made M14s feel "correct" in some Patriotic way when they come up to shoulder.
I don't have a lot of time behind my AR10, but what time I do have has impressed me. Smoother than the M14, quicker follow up if needed..
I agree about the chicom receivers, you spend so much getting one up to spec you might as well start with a SA to begin with. I'm kind of lusting for one of the new James River M14's. Sticker shock!!
