Looks like you have a great site here. I am just getting involved in the AR10 platform with if all goes well a BM LAR308 in the next week or so. I am a dyed in the wool M14 shooter that dabbles in AR15s also. I have reloaded 7.62 and 5.56 for years so I'm looking forward to the challenge of rolling some for a new weapon. I look forward to learning a bunch and contributing when I can.

Let me be the first to say welcome to the site.

You'll find a lot of useful information and some not so useful too. B)

I'll start it out too, and I only do this to help try keep people on track. BUT please refer to the rifles by their proper nomenclature, ArmaLite makes the only AR-10 and it is trademarked as such.

Thanks but no thanks. I don't need you to keep me "on track".

Who died and left YOU drill instructor? You own Armalite?

I don't need a 16 month, 48 post NEW GUY busting my balls over something like this.

A simple welcome would have went a long way.

Bark up someone elses tree pal.

I would hope others here are not as "friendly" as you are.

The reason is because Armalite has spent a lot of money producing the AR-10 when no-one else would. They have spent a lot of time building the name and reputation not to just have someone else use it to describe their rifle. Another problem stems from the fact that many people refer to problems with their "semi 308" as a "AR-10 problems". This misnomer leads people to believe that the AR-10 is a poorly built rifle with a lot of problems, when in fact, the opposite is true.

Even if you don't agree at least you should understand, you wouldn't order a "Coke" if you wanted a "Pepsi", you also wouldn't order a "Pepsi Coke" or you wouldn't drive a Chevy and call it a Ford.

OH CRAP...HERE WE GO AGAIN.....
Pvt. Joker....Welcome to the site and hope you will find info that helps you along in owning a AR-10 VARIANT...as I like to call them..makes things much easier..
AS for the designation, just as Colt will throw a major hissy over the AR-15 name...We take the AR-10 designation to heart...no offense meant....my apologies if you where offended...
but MrRaley is correct in the designation explanation...but we do have many other .308 black rifle owners here and you are welcome if you like..
I am curious...Your designation of your rifle is confusing.
BM LAR308 .....BM stands for BushMaster....but the LAR is a Rock Rivers model designation....I am just curious as to what you are getting...if you would be so kind as to specify what brand it is..this would help us better answer any questions as to help you with info...
Again welcome to the site and sorry for the "lesson"...but we do take certain things to heart...here
BMS....

I was a bit taken back with the 1st response as I am new to this platform, I have extensive experience with "AR15s" , Colt, BM and RRA, M1 Garands and M14s ( my favorite ).
My mistake with my post as the two I'm considering are:
1.) DPMS 16" ( looks like an M4 barrel, collapsable 6 postion stock )
2.) BM LAR308? ( A4 with gas block and BUIS sights, 20" barrel, A2 stock )
Thats where I'm at now. I will have one or the other as soon as I sell my bolt gun. I look forward to shooting it as does my 14 year old son who loves his BM XM15 M4 ? but wants a bit more as far as bullet goes ( He likes my M1A and wants to be like his pop but likes this "platform" !!)

I'm not mad at the other fella just a bit surprised at how "clickish" it sounded to me. I have instructed many people at our gun club and had to deal with people that never shot any type of firearm and knew nothing as far as termonology or nomenclature, I had patience with those folks and had positive experiences with all of them.

mrraley needs to "lighten up" a bit. I understand he may be a bit "excited" and a guardian of this weapon so no one gets a bad idea of what this is all about and wants to help but I'm here to make some friends and learn, not be schooled in a demeaning way. I did my time with a unyielding DI, I'm not interested in that as a civilian.

He does not know me, what I have been thru or done as far as firearms goes or anything for that matter. I do not think he is a very good ambassador for this site or even very friendly if he comes off like king shiite to new people that make small errors in terminology. A list of different mfgs. noting the designation of each sent thru a PM would have been the way to go IMO.

We as firearms owners, shooters and defenders of the 2nd need to be a team, not nit picking each other.

I may well be in the wrong place, time will decide that.

Rant over.

Welcome to the site! I made the mistake of asking an ArmaLite salesman if any other AR-10 type top ends would fit my ArmaLite lowers. He wasn't rude, just mentioned that AR-10 is a trademark owned by ArmaLite. On the other hand ArmaLite is out of barrel wrenches, one of the tech guys gave me a part number at Brownell's. It arrived today, is marked DPMS in the middle, but has AR-10 on one end and LR-308 on the other end. After my first AR-10T I thought about the other manufacturers as they have top ends in stock for quite a few calibers. I wound up with another ArmaLite as everything is interchangeable. I have seen posts from owners of all the .308 (or similar) AR type look alikes. Once you make the decision we would like to hear of your experience. There is also a lot of information on accessories and options. I am interested in the performance of rifles with free floating fore ends vs standard fore ends.

Thanks,
Barry

Welcome to the forum. The AR10 thing is like the M1A thing. Only SA makes the M1A. mrraley response was very civilized compared to some forums. :S

We had a similar "issue" on an M14 site I have been a member of for many years. The debate was calling everything M1As ( SA )or M14s ( full auto issue rifles and some ChiCom rifles )because a few people were "anal" about the nomenclature being "incorrect". We decided it was OK to call all of the variants of ANY mfg. "M14" instead of getting into a pissing contest on a daily basis.

Now EVERYONE knows , even the FNGs what EVERYONE else is talking about and NO ONE gets his panties in a wad over something that don't amount to a hill of beans in the whole scheme of things.

I understand being a "purist" but one has to know what battles are worth fighting and there is way more important stuff to discuss on this site than petty crap like this. As far as the "civilized" response goes...........many, many tough guy keyboard commandos out there. Many know alot of facts they have read but have little trigger time and zero "real life" experiences related to the weapon.
I can smell em a mile away.........................
