Hey Everyone was created by vmkeith
Hey all, I'm new to the AR world and looking to buy or build a hunting rifle. I've been looking around to compare AR10s and AR15s. My choices for AR15s are pretty much limited to a 6.5mm, 6.8mm, or even the Bushie .450. HOWEVER, I'd prefer to have a .308, which is an AR10 platform from what I was told.

I've been using the same Remington .30-06 for big game since I started hunting, 28yrs ago, with only upgrading the optics. I got to really like the M-16/AR style rifles when I was in the Marines, and that's what I want now. Does anybody have any tips or comments on buying a whole rifle compared to building one? Differences in cost? Particular companies to stay away from?

What are you huning?

The AR-15 can suport up to the .450 SOCOM and maybe more. If you're hell bent on a "TEN" then the .308 Winchester is a big step over the AR-15. They are fun and buildable by the average Joe with common tools and a decent mechanical aptitude. I would encourage you to do it. You may not save much on your first build but what it makes up for in introspect is well worth it.

Hello. I'm a newbie too. I'm putting together a parts list for my build of an AR 10 chambered for .308

Sorry, don't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm sure it will help VMKeith as well. It looks like I'm going with the Armalite lower receiver, Timney drop in trigger with small pin 4 pound. What other part kit should I use to compliment the Timney? I don't want to buy the Armalite lower parts kit, and have an extra trigger, all though it might not be bad to have an extra trigger. Is there a work around? another kit that is minus the trigger since I'm going with a Timney?

Thanks in advance. This is my first gun build ever, and I wanna do it right.

Hello LittleBIGgun, remember two things my friend, we where all newbies at one time, and asking questions is how we learn...even when your my age...LOL
On your trigger issue....I would say that, no it don't hurt to have the spare parts around, never know when they might be needed...as for the trigger kit..you may have better luck posting up your questions in the trigger section, that way people will know that is what you are asking about OK.

I don't want to buy the Armalite lower parts kit, and have an extra trigger,

If I remember correctly, Armalite offers a triggerless LPK, check their site. Also check 762SASS.com, he's an Armalite dist. and often has stuff when Armalite doesn't.

What its going to broil down to is what do you hunt, and how far away is it. I went with the AR10 because the .308 is far more effective for hunting than either 6.8 or 6.5. Do you hunt on foot, or from a stand?

The hunting I do is black tail deer in Western Washington and has never exceeded 200 yards. Their are a few open areas that are greater than 200 yards, but ranging them out, they are around 250-275 yards.

As for my hunting style, I'm not one to use stands, preferring to walk the area. During the spring I pick a couple of areas to hunt based on the published deer populations and scout them out. While scouting I note areas to sit that give me good cover.

Ok, sounds like we hunt in a similar fashion. I have ben using the AR10 for this close to 10 years. I just traded my old one for the 16" target model from ArmaLite. You will loose approximately 300 fps dropping down from a 24" barrel. Even with the losses you still have an effective range of 700yards before the bullet goes transonic, and starts to destabilize. You have plenty of power to take a deer inside 600 yards. The light weight of the 16" package will be verry welcome when carrying along on your ground hunt. You can't beat the compact size of this package when on the move. Hope this helps.
