You've come to the right place for info and you'd be hard pressed to ask something our techinicians can't answer or find. We look forward to seeing your posts and photos.
As for the barrel, I would think the length would really depend on you and what you hope to do with it.
Different barrels for different applications I believe.
Mine has the stock 20" on it since I don't hunt long range, (or actually at all) and felt no need to put a barrel on it that could make 1000 yard shots since up here in RI, they really don't exist.
It might help the guys help you a bit if you described what you were hoping to DO with the rifle and then I'm sure they can help you come up with whatever is best suited for you needs.
Glad to have you aboard and good luck with your soon to be new arrival...
Sharkey

Good choice on weapon. By AR-10'A' did you get the newer version that takes the SR25 pattern mags? I have yet to see one of those. I don't doubt armalites quality, but I am interested in hearing about the reliability of the new stuff.
While I've only seen videos on youtube, It is possible to reach 1000 with a 16" barrel. A longer barrel only provides more velocity, not necessarily any gain in accuracy. In fact sorter barrels have more favorable harmonics and can potentially out shoot a longer barrel of same quality, all other things being equal.
For what you want out of it, I think you will be served well with your choice.
I tend to urge folks away from BDC scopes, unless adjustable, I have not seen a BDC that matched a rifle ammo combination close enough for my liking. Your results may differ.

yeah i know, i'm not new to guns, I had shot guns and 22lr growing up, shot the M16 in the Air force (only once every 2 years though)13fcolt wrote: Amarlaite adds so many letters to the end of each model number it can be quite a challenge to know what exactly someone has. there have been a couple 'deciphering' threads in the past about it. you know "I got a new AR-10A4BCNGBNMFLMNOP carbine but I can't tell what <part> I need". LOL

13fcolt wrote: Chrome lining does tend to be less accurate due to the chrome not depositing evenly on the surface of the bore. I have seen a few extreme cases (not AR10) where the bore had a reverse taper caused by sloppy hard chroming, making life difficult. A chrome bore can sometimes be lapped into consistency, but this is usually much more work and cost than just buying a good barrel. A few special tools required to do it right.
SO, yes, SS should be expected to out perform chrome lined for accuracy.
you could split the difference and get a custom 18" barrel cut. just a thought...
500-600 yards is totally doable with a 16" tube, and much easier to lug around. If you take it hunting, you will not regret the 16. The only place the extra 4" will really be appreciated is if you really want to spend time on going for 1000. The added FPS will make it easier to keep your bullets over transonic and help keep your trajectory flatter, so you're not as likely to run out of elevation. I would not venture here unless you were also rolling your own ammo for the task. It can be done with some (expensive) factory ammo, but never as well as ammo tailored to your weapon. Either way you want to go, we are here to help.
