Barry Sadler. An oldie but a goodie. As a teenager and young man I read all of his "Casca" novels as well.

Didn't he die under mysterious circumstances in Mexico or one of those countries down south?

He lived in Guatemala, was shot in the head during a robbery, the shooter was never found.
He eventually died from the brain trauma.
