How many magazines and what size, do you think will suffice?
Personally, I think 1-5, 1-10, and six 20 rounders are enough. But I like to have enough on hand to last the life of the firearm, as you never know when you may not be able to get more.
I don't have an upper limit but for a minimum, basic load of 7 for a rifle, 5 for a pistol seems to work out well. I stick with odd numbers to allow for one in the weapon.
I'd like to get 3 more 20's for the AR10 for a total of 15.
I've got 5 for my sti, I'd like to get to 15.
I've got plenty for the AR15's, I think 30 pmags but I'm down to 50ish usgi, I've been trading a few.
When I can get back to buying again, I'll keep adding mags as long as I have the weapon.
I'm kinda of in colt's, park here it's a matter of just buying them when the cash and supply is there, same with ammo. Heck I gone out and shot a week worth of ammo in a day for fun, so more is always better. :cowboy: :silly:

this truly begs the question...what is the mission?
I like a mix from 5 rds up. If I am hunting hog I want a 15+ rd mag. Hogs often run in packs and the packs can be 20+, they are mean, they will charge and they can hurt bad.
Deer hunting, well for 20 years hunted with a Ruger No 1 (single shot). I have a strong philosophy of one shot, one kill. I don't get buck fever and see one at 1500 yds and start banging away. If I don't think I can get a clean one shot kill I don't take it, hope he moves into a better position or take a pass.
I figure anymore than about 1/2 dozen mags and you are beginning to do some trading and I am not active in that so I have enough that in the event the SHTF and I find myself in the position of having to defend or on offense I have enough win one way or another...

If you knew how many I have for all my rifles, you would just shake your head.
I have pretty much settled on 10 as a nice round number, simply because it is a nice round number for keeping track of them. Half go into unused storage, on the outside possibility Feinstein wins. I have enough to enjoy shooting and to pass on to my son. Any more and I would rather spend the money on ammo or reloading supplies. With the cost of ammo, Having plentiful magazines for my smaller, cheaper caliber rifles is more important. At current prices there are going to be fewer and fewer 200 round days with the AR10.
Making me miss the good old days.
It used to be that a shooting trip meant a few thousand rounds were going to be fired. Typically, it was across multiple firearms and at least one non-gun friend or acquaintance to give them a chance to see what they were missing. It was always an event that usually ended in a cookout. Good times. There were those times I'd run out to test new loads or just check zero because I changed something that I didn't shoot that much. Anytime I was selling or trading a firearm, it was always done at the range. Nothing seals the deal like letting them shoot.
Then there was the NFA years when I could afford to feed full auto. I went through more 5.56 in a month than Ft. Benning.
