I don't do a break in anymore. If I were to get a barrel that fouled quickly, I would try a shoot-clean ritual to see if it can be smoothed out. Otherwise what possible good is cleaning between shots going to do that triple lapping didn't already?
If you need to polish a rough throat, then do that. Cleaning the bore isn't going to make that happen.
As far as bore snakes? Well I like my dirty mop. Consider I don't scrub a barrel until groups start to open and it doesn't matter anyway. A quick pull through after a shoot and the loose crud is gone. I do think it takes quite a bit to load a boresnake enough that it leaves anything behind, like a dirty mop. At least I have never observed a dirty patch after snaking.
I am curious now, so I will pay more attention at the next cleaning. I think it would make a good write up.
Also, sometimes all we've got is what we read and what we've heard from other people. I don't know about any of you, but my knowledge base would be pretty small if I were limited to only talking about what I have first hand experience with.
I will say though, that when I'm unsure, I try to preface those statements with: "I've heard..." or "I read..."
