So my AR 10T has the SS 20" bbl, but I always wanted the 18", so I am thinking of having it shortened. What prompted this was I want to flute the bbl and am thinking that while I am at it why not get it shortened then fluted at the same time, I also plan on changing out to a different flash suppressor (

Thoughts, advantages, disadvantages, other paths to take?
I was originally thinking about an 18 inch but thought getting a 20 would leave me with a good excuse to get the carbine some day.
If it were mine I would have them cut it back and take the weight loss and handling.
txlongshotb4 had his lija cut down to 18", and I'd say from his last hunting pic, it hasn't hurt anything at all. I think he went down from 24" if I recall. There will be a velocity loss, but if the job is done right & proper there is no reason to expect an accuracy loss. 18" barrels are becoming the more common length being a good compromise all around. One thing I have noticed amongst those that don't use handloads, is that after a year or 2 with an 18" barrel, they end up with a 16".
It all boils down to having a rifle that is easier to use at the distances most frequently shot. I think the jump from 20 or 24 to a 16 scares some folks into thinking they wont have those extra inches if they should someday need it, but going 2 inches at a time sort of eases them into what was always more practical for them to begin with.
