My gunsmith buddy is trying to get an RGA To send my rifle back this week.......glad to hear they took good care of you......my guy is 100% sure my bolt is out of spec in the bolt carrier (too loose....falls back and forth with no resistance. I hope they hook me up with new parts.......we will see. Regarding your ammo concerns.......I am not a reload guy.....I only put first quality ammo thru my gun. I have buddy's that shoot the steel case lacquered up Russian crap.....they say it works fine.......I am skeptical.. I love shooting Winchester ballistic silver tip for a hunting round......I like hornady ammo for accurate target shooting......for economical shooting (emptying a 20 round mag on a terrorist turtle at my deer lease).... I go with a soft nose federal or Winchester load. $12 per box. There are guys on this site like Bob Downey that are super knowledgable about all things AR......in saying that.....I have heard a lot of guys rave about cheap Russian ammo......that the lacquer is not a factor......My AR10 is one of my most expensive weapons.......I just like treating her to good factory ammo.

They did take good care of me. And if you have an issue, contact Martin, the AR10T site owner. He has some good contacts at Armalite. I cannot speak for what they will do for you, and Martin assured me that Armalite has a good reputation for taking care of their customers. As long as they keep up the good customer service they gave me, I'm a customer for life.

As far as Ammo goes, yes, I've shot the lacquered Russian Ammo (Brown Bear) and it fowled up another gun I have. As far as I'm concerned, I'll never us it again. When the gun heats up the lacquer melts and sticks to everything it touches. I've shot Wolf ammo as well with no issue. The wolf is un-lacquered. However, the Wolf tends to be dirtier than other Ammo so a more rigorous cleaning is required after shooting it.

Also, after this experience, I'm going to be more detailed in the cleaning of my guns.

I like to shoot a great deal. Does anyone have an opinion on Winchester 147 grn FMJ?
Its' factory ammo and fairly reasonable.

Deenerman, please add to this thread and let us know what Armalite does/has to say about your issue. I hope it is a positive experience. Look forward to hearing what happens.

My rifle will do anything for Winchester Ballistic Silvertips

They are nickle plated brass with a moly coated bullet (will also help make cleaning a lot easier).

Downside ... ammo is hella-expensive.

It was my thinking that this is normal for AR10s being that the bolt is so heavy. I want to say I have even seen it mentioned in an armalite TSB, but I could be mistaken (or the owners manual?). Mine is loose as a goose and runs okay.

Anyway, good call on being selective about the ammo you use. It's my policy as well. The one time I crossed the line into garbage ammo was a quick reminder as to why saving a few cents per round is never worth it.

Regarding the bolt carrier assembly being loose, I cannot recall that either of mine have much play in the upper housing. FYI

I just ordered www.cheaperthandirt.com/ItemDetail.aspx?sku=3-0305008 (ten box case, $14 shipping, but no sales tax of course) but then I saw this and spent $14 too much www.targetsportsusa.com/p-1163-federal-p...oint-ammunition.aspx - this last one has free shipping with a case. I think I'm not going to buy or shoot anything else through my Noveske N6 unless it's specific hunting rounds for actually hunting. At 20 bucks a round, no sales tax, no shipping, to your door not even the gas to drive and buy them... I think it's the best way to spend your ammo dollar on an armalite AR10. The cheapest stuff I've seen worth putting through an AR10 is around $17 a box... plus shipping (and shipping is around ten dollars for one box or 10 boxes, or at a store front you pay sales tax... so...) unless you buy a case of it... on that targetsports site (or other discount ammo suppliers that waive shipping on full case orders). This gold medal match at 168gr WILL shoot well through your rifle, chances are you will not find another factory ammo that will do better. It's clean, reliable, reloadable, it's everything you want... and when you look at it... it's basically "target plinker" price. Stuff that cost less than this per round is often junk, and at worst dangerous or will cost you as much as you saved on extra cleaning needs or headaches or repair costs... I will also be trying the 175gr gold medal match in 7.62 NATO after I shoot a good bit of this 168gr stuff... it will probably shoot equally good, it will only be fractions of inches to figure out which one shoots best out of my 1:10 twist carbine barrel... but that's my ammo advice. Be willing to buy a case of some of the best target/match factory ammo you can buy. And feel good about your investment. Save brass and get it reloaded one way or another...

I've only recently purchased an Armalite AR-10. Taken it to the range only once but here's what I learned. The Herters 150g steel case does not cycle well at all, I have a half dozen or so bent or badly dented rnds from jam ups. Since then I've learned the steel case is very hard on the extractor and ejector. Don't have any idea what a bolt rebuild would cost or a new bolt period, but likely more than the few additional $ you'll pay for good ammo. The lacquer issue is also reason to avoid the cheep stuff. Think of it as running regular in a 70's muscle car. (4P's) Preperation Prevents Poor Performance. Who wants 990 rnds of steel case .308? $6.oo/box. The first 30 rnds cycled fine but that was quality ammo. Live and learn, but a $409 mistake kinda ticked me off. Another thing, if it says fits AR-10 doesn't mean it'll fit an AR-10, details, details. My love affair with this AR ain't gonna be cheap, niether am I.

Yes, my bad for using crappy ammo. And, here is my beef. This is my SHTF gun. I may need to run cheaper ammo through it at some point. When my gun smith used the JP Enterprises bolt carrier assembly, he had no issue runny any ammo. If you compare the extractors you will see the difference. The JP extractor has a complete rim. The armalite one does not.

Now, to the credit of Armalite, they polished out my barrel where the casings chamber, cleaned the gun, and returned at no cost to me. And I appriciate that. And I think their extractor design could be improved.

I met Mario and all the Armalite crew at Camp Perry several years ago, they are a great bunch of guy's. I just picked up my third AR-10, a Navy (T) Carbine, it is a hammer (1/2" to 3/4" groups at 100 yards).
You will definately see a diference with better quality ammo.
